PSA: Avoid the Nacho Cheese Sauce at this Gas Station

And I always thought that the hot dogs were the thing to avoid.

Sacramento County health officials have confirmed five cases of botulism in patients who ate at the Valley Oak Food and Fuel gas station, and are investigating three other probable cases and one suspect case, with all nine patients still hospitalized. Officials believe the outbreak is linked to nacho cheese sauce that was served at the station, but the exact cause of the poisoning is still under investigation, officials said.

I's actually pretty serious, some have been hospitalized for three weeks.

It took me until my early 30's, but I finally learned the lesson to avoid all food from gas stations!

Yes, I've been tempted by the errant hot dog once in a great while in the middle of the night, traveling on the highways, but thought better of it, especially as my stomach is super sensitive to bad food.

In the rare event that I partake of anything not from the fountain, or prepackaged, I only get stuff from a familiar stop with VERY fast turnover of the stuff. Usually just a hot dog.

BTW, those chopped onions can be tainted in under an hour. VERY sketchy.

I'm very careful with the dogs and brats. I usually sample each one until I find the one that is the best and freshest tasting and hottest. No, I don't nibble on them, a lick is good enough.

Never been to a Kwik Trip have you? If you are ever in WI, MN, or IA and find one stop and check one out. They put other gas stations to shame.

We've got a gas brand called RaceTrac around here. They sell a hot dog that tastes exactly like the Costco hot dog but it's about 2/3 the size of the Costco one. They sit on one of those roller things that cooks the heck out of them so I figure that any sort of pathogen is cooked into submission! We usually get them once a week or so. I've not ever dipped into their nacho cheese dip, however.

Looks like a major break down in training, or maybe an employee that just doesn't get it. The products used in these scenarios are made for the industry and are very user friendly, unless of course this c-store is privately owned and are using questionable products, not meant for that application. My whole adult life is nearly half and half restaurant management and c-store management. If you "have a clue", this type of thing does not happen. I understand how bad things can happen, but this was a major breakdown somewhere.
I guess one should use caution with all food purchases. Is there a reason no one else is buying something? One good way to decide on a restaurant when on vacation, is to go where it is busy. Locals all flock to a restaurant for a reason, avoid the buffets with 2 cars in the lot, you need quick turnover of the food.

The nacho cheese sauce could be a commercially made, pre-packaged item that the store just had the bad luck of receiving.
I wouldn't be too quick to blame the store nor any of their employees without finding out first if anyone in the store actually handled the stuff improperly.
Even though it is a distinct possibility, it's one of many.
