Chuck old smoke detectors in trash?

My gut tells me there's something inside that should not be thrown in the trash.

Your gut is correct!
Older ionizing smoke detectors have a bit of radioactive Americium. They should go the hazardous waste disposal. (Some are photoelectric detectors which can be trashed.)

Interesting. I just looked it up for my local area and they say to put them in the trash.

There are older ionizing detectors that should not just be put in the trash. If you are only dealing with newer ones purchased for home use in the last couple decades, then you will probably not run into one. For older ones, the document linked by cbelt3 should be consulted to see if alternate disposal such as sending back to the manufacturer.
