RIP Sam Panopoulos, inventor of Hawaiian Pizza. That's right, RIP. Fight me!

Genius, innovator (fight me!) Sam Panopoulos has died at age 83. He shall be missed (fight me!), but his gift to the pizza pantheon, the Hawaiian pizza (fight me!), shall live on.

In his honor, here is my list of the Five Best Things You Can Put on a Pizza
Pepperoni
Black olives
Sausage
Mushrooms
Pineapple (fight me!)

And Five Things to Never Put on a Pizza
Anchovies
White sauce
Baked beans (Yes, I've seen it)
Spinach
A knife and a fork

Thank you for the tasty treats, Sam. Rest indeed.

For me, all I refuse to have on a pizza is Anchovies. Blech.

"This is the story of a young couple in Portland, Maine

While waiting for her husband Don
To return home from work, she reaches for a can of anchovies
As she spreads the tiny fish across a piece of lettuce
She notices a small note at the bottom of the can
Written on it is a telephone number

Curious, she dials, and is told, "Don't move, lady, we'll be right over"
Placing the phone back on the hook, she turns
To see three smartly dressed men standing in her kitchen doorway
Before she realizes what is happening to her
She is rolled tightly in long sheets of cellophane
Transported to an international airport and placed on a waiting jet-liner
All this being too much for her to comprehend, she passes out"

I have no problem with Anchovies, but they have been known to get people in trouble (that bowling ball, it's my wife!).

Pineapple on a pizza is akin to an orange slice on a cheeseburger.

A vivid comparison, but you're wrong. ;)

Our standard pizza:

Thin crust
Extra mozzarella
sun-dried tomatoes
ham
mushrooms
black olives
spinach
and
pineapple!

Pineapple makes the pizza for me and the family.

Put whatever you want on, I'll pick off the mushrooms and dead fish.
a little spinach, basil or arugula is fine with me.

Hey, just because it's round and delivered in a box does not mean it's pizza!

I have a friend (yes, he's still a friend in spite of it) who started ordering anchovies on pizza because he was tired of people always asking him for a piece when he got a normal topping. Needless to say, it worked; no one asks any more.

Just about the only way I can tolerate pineapple is on a "Hawaiian" pizza.

RIP Sam.

R.I.P. Sam

We don't eat a lot of pizza but we love pineapple. Right now I have about 10 in the yard, ready to pick, and a half dozen in the fridge. I put it in smoothies, add it to cottage cheese and salads. Any other ideas out there in Mac land?

Sorry, but pinapple pizza doesn't fly with me. Pineapple upside down cake? Hells yeah!!! Pizza? No.

And anchovies aren't so bad if you get about half of a normal topping of it. I have a friend who ALWAYS ordered pizza with it. If your drinking some brew ha-has, you may just like the combo. (I did when I first tried)

I never order them myself these days, because EVERY other person I know says blech to anchovies, so I try to get along.

My wife and I love Pineapple and Ham on pizza. I suspect most that say it's not good have never tried it or
had a good one. My personal favorite is good NY style cheese pizza, just cheese, sauce and good crust.

RIP Sam

OT: We discovered a local Italian restaurant a few years ago and it's about the only place we go now for Italian.

This is the best cheese pizza I can find in NC.

I used to think I hated anchovies. A bad anchovy is a horrible anchovy, and that was all I'd had - on a dare at second-tier pizza joints, dropped devil-may-care on wilted lettuce on a Caesar salad that not even Brutus would have dispatched, et cetera.

Then I had a good one: a life-changing experience.

And now I am an insufferable anchovy snob. I don't really consume them at home, but I will gladly turn a bad anchovy into a federal case and complain to the restaurant owner, to the humiliation of my unenlightened anchovy-agnostic dining partners.

Please hate anchovies only if you've had a proper one. Probably from a bottle, not a can, though some canned ones are pretty good.

Black Olives are a surefire way to ruin a pizza, even picking them off doesn't work because you cannot remove the flavor, yuck.

Sausage, mushrooms, onions, variety of cheeses are the best

Admittedly, when I'm all hopped up on the crunch, I'll enjoy a BBQ chicken pizza.

But obviously I'm not in my right mind while it's happening.
