Where can I buy steel rods?
Posted by: wowzer

I am doing a project that needs steel rods to purchase. Where does someone go about finding these things? I tried home depot but there steel is too soft. It needs to hold up substantial weight. Thanks.

you mean rebar? and it bends too much?

Not knowing anything about your project, how about a small diameter pipe? or even PCV?

Definitely gonna need some details about what it needs to hold and what diameter you tried that failed...

I'll second onlinemetals if you don't have a local steel shop or machine shop that can fix you up.

That's pretty cool. Their catalog has 3873 pages. And, it turns out they have a will-call facility in Atlanta!

You'd die of old age trying to get a paper catalog from McMaster-Carr unless you do literally MILLIONS of dollars in business with them. They wouldn't even SELL you a catalg "back in the day".
They do have pretty much every industrial item you can think of... until the 1980's you could buy a steam locomotive from them... "call for price" of course.

The Machine Shop I retired from used to get 2 copies per year, each supervisor got one, for a while but
they slowed down over the years in sending them out. I used to have an older copy because they used
to throw the old ones out but I can't remember where I put it.

There's 77 copies of various issue numbers for sale on eBay.

Oh, they have a great online site NOW... but back when I was trying to get my gunsmithing business going, I couldn't get their paper catalog for love or money, and they all but flat told me that until I've spent five figures, don't even bother asking as every copy they print is for "established customers".
Now if I need something from them, I just order it online...

thank you for the online ideas. I never even considered doing online. I simply did not know how to purchase steel that is higher in carbon content. I am trying to temper steel so that it will hold its shape and yet be able to resist deformation. It doesn't have to be large, perhaps about 5x1 inches. From what I've read, the steel at Home Depot can't be tempered.

Also a plate of steel to be held in place by these rods. The goal will was to build a safe box.

Wowzer;
If you have the capability to heat the steel to 1500 degrees, and quench in the appropriate medium (water or light oil, depending on the steel), then re-heat the steel to the correct tempering temperature (350-700 degrees, with an accuracy of plus or minus 25 degrees) to get the hardness and toughness you need, go for it!

If not, be aware that if this part is going to be in a position for something bad to happen if it fails... well... maybe something professionally made?

You say a 5" long by 1" diameter of home depot mild steel failed? It takes a @#$%& TON to bend/fail a 1" dia mild steel rod, if I'm understanding you...

Really need some details here.

If you want probably the best chance at a steel that will NOT require you to take up blacksmithing (a hobby I highly recommend, but not for a one-off part!), then order a properly sized piece of Stressproof.
Stressproof is a pre-heat-treated and mechanically forged steel bar that is about as tough as you can get as-is without some fairly elaborate heat treating.

Ah! All of a sudden what you're doing snaps into focus! :-)

So, these 5" rods will be the "pins" that hold a safe door shut? 4140 cold finished should do just fine, a lot cheaper than Stressproof. If you really want to stop Lex Luthor from breaking in, see if they have some A2 drill rod. You will NOT enjoy trying to cut it or drill it, but it will cause a theif to give up trying to open it. Be sitting down when you price it.

Flat steel stock, you'll be better off seeing if there is a local steel supply, or sheet metal shop.

It's good to hear from someone that knows something about metallurgy. I hear all the time, be careful you'll take the temper out of a piece of steel when you're actually tempering it or drawing it back. I did a fair amount of heat treating during my 2 years in Tech school in the early 80's. A2, O1 and carburizing lower carbon steel to case harden it.

Don't get me started about "billet aluminum", or "tempering" when they mean "hardening"... Or "Look, you can see the metal crystalized, that's why it broke!" (no, you're seeing the grain structure of the steel you broke with the 15 sledgehammer, you damn ape!). grinning smiley
