How we train water recovery dogs

This short video shows how we introduce a dog to searching for a missing person from a boat. We enlist the help of an awesome all volunteer Lake Monticello Water Rescue Team, mike the diver, and send him down with the dog's reward. The dog learns it's very rewarding to find that diver. We make it easy by driving the boat right to the diver and the bubbles are a visual cue as well as provide scent. My dog perched on the side of the boat indicates which direction she wants to go, then her head turns. Finally the whining and paws down on the deck, nose going to the water means we're close. It's a fun game to acclimate them to scenting from a boat. Then we progress to using decomposition scent so there's no live diver but the game is the same. Find the source and get a reward from the handler.

I had no idea dogs could track people under water.

I'll see you again... when we are both like golden clouds on the wind.

It's also how zombies traverse a lake. ON the bottom. Just need zombie sniffing dogs when the 'pocalypse happens.

Scent comes to the surface via air and gas bubbles. The dogs are used to help reduce the area divers need to search in a recovery effort. If there are no underwater currents holding scent at the bottom, the dogs will be within 10 feet of a body.

Some breeds have seriously sensitive noses. Some not so much.

Mr. Lahey: A lot of people, don’t know how to drink. They drink against the grain of the liquor. And when you drink against the grain of the liquor? You lose.

Randy: What the @#$%& are you talking about?
