What should I do with this iMac (Early 2008)?
2.4GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo
5GB Ram
20" screen
It needs a new HD.

It was my parents desktop machine, recently replaced with a new iMac after this HD died. They had good backs ups.

Install Chrome OS via Cloud Ready (on a cheap external drive) for free.

Just check to see if it's a certified model from this list:

I did it early last year and it's running strong:

Unless you need it -- $150 on Craigslist as is, bad drive. Maybe $100 if no takers after a couple of weeks. Make sure you give the correct specs, 5 GB of ram isn't possible.

I personally replaced a dead HD with a 500GB SSD in a late 2007 iMac C2D and it runs Mavericks and El Cap very well. I use it as a backup Mac and for monitoring my security cameras.

Remember how when you were little
you could just rip off your diaper and
just run around naked and everyone
thought it was so cute and funny?

Anyway, I need bail money.

5 GB would be a 4GB module and 1GB module.

I'd put in a new SSD. Cheap fix, not super difficult, and it would be entirely usable.

Yeah, you could prolly run it off an external, but through USB 2.0 (or Firewire, if you can find a case), but it would work better to replace the internal. Don't be intimidated by the take-the-screen-off-with-suction-cups step. It pops right off.

Put an ssd and updated software, that machine would be fine for many people.
