Heard of someone who thought it would be cute to have a personalized plate of "NONE". He (or she) later realized that when a cop wrote a ticket on a vehicle that didn't have any plates they put down "NONE" on the ticket. Had a hard time explaining all those unpaid tickets.

There was a story in the local newspaper (L.A. Times) several years ago where the consumer wrote in his first couple of choices for a personalized plate, and then wrote in "NO PLATE", essentially asking that if his listed choices weren't available, he didn't want a personalized plate. Since the convicts didn't understand the disclaimer blurb, he got a set of license plates that read "NO PLATE", and of course got parking tickets up the wazoo. He thought the plates were fun, and evidently kept them for awhile until the overpaid bureaucrats figured out they should add those words to not allowed list. Pretty sure it'll pop up if you google the "NO PLATE" license plate story in California, it's totally legit.

We've picked up some some good ones over the years, and when I went in to the AAA a couple of decades back to order some plates, the gal at the counter, said, "OK, what are fifth and sixth choices gonna be...?", figuring there was no hope for the three choices on the form. But I got lucky and scored, and ended up learning something in the process... The first and second choices were the same thing, only the second substituted a zero for the letter "O". When they both showed up as available, I tried to get both of them, but then a little bit later, the computer balked and said the two requests essentially cancelled each other out. Back to AAA to snag the letter "O" version, then a bit of research, where at the time it said the DMV had the right to disallow plates that were too similar as to be confusing with an issued plate. Not sure what the current regs are now, but imagine that even if nothing else has changed, the computers are probably faster, and would catch that stuff at the counter, rather than hiccuping a couple of days later. As noted, a lesson learned, no confusion allowed.

I use my ham license for my plate. Easy to remember and occasionally I get a good conversation out of it. Tried to get my wife to do the same thing but she said old men would be trying to talk to her all the time. :-)

One of my neighbor's got the plate "P Mahone" for her Irish husband. In gaelic it means "Kiss my Arse" She told the DMV it was her husband's name, and they believed her.

For years I tried to fit my cousin Maureen's name in the California plate. The car is gone, but she is still my favorite. It was a '73 Yellow Saab.

I love people who pay the voluntary tax to get a personalized plate. They can have whatever they want on it.

My wife and I tried to get each other plates a few years ago. I was successful, her car has 'Puchica' - it is Honduran slang for 'Damn It.' She tried to get me either 'Gringo' or 'Pendajo' (jackass). While the registry showed both available, both were rejected by the DMV.

You mean you couldn't have whatever you wanted on it ?

The notoriety of owning a hemi isn't what it was.

Used to have a Dodge with 2 installed.

I once heard about a pilot who got the plate "ONE CZI" for his wife's car.

If you flew out west you may understand it. "CZI" was the three letter identifier for a VOR/DME (radio-navaid) located at a location called Crazy Woman, WY.
