Email attachements arrive as winmail.dat that I can't open

I have a problem receiving attachments from my boss. They come in as a winmail.dat file that asks me to open with VLC. I get attachments from others, including others in the company, but always have to ask him to resend via his personal email account - and then I get it ok.

HQ in switzerland has an outlook server. We use godaddy here in the US. HQ I.T. has investigated and can't find out why and GoDaddy has investigated and cant find out why. Of course, both blame the other.

Any ideas?

Its from people using Outlook on Windows.
Sometimes there is no actual attachment – if you open it it's just a rich text version of the email.

And sometimes there are attachments in there.

I've been using TNEF's Enough for a couple years, but haven't recently investigated whether there's something better.

That app works well enough for me for the occasions I get those winmail.dat attachements.

I have this issue with some senders, too. I've found it easiest to use this tool to open the winmail.dat file: [www.joshjacob.com]

Hate those... but not sure how you "use" godaddy? They are an ISP/domain service?

jdc We use GoDaddy for both our DNS, Webhosting and email

FYI This occurs if I use Outlook or Apple Mail as the mail client.

Here is a new development. I forwarded the email to one of my colleagues in the office (Uses Outlook on a Windows machine) and he saw and opened the attachment with no problem?

Just downloaded TNEF's Enough and will take it for a spin.

FYI this only happens with my boss? I am able to open attachments from others in switzerland who are using the same exchange server & outlook?

It's not an Exchange thing – it's an Outlook on Windows thing.

There are settings that a person could change to prevent their Outlook from behaving that way (sending the winmail.dat).

Bik is spot-on... it's a etting in windows Outlook... and once you're stuck with a winmail.dat file, crack it open with TNEF's Enough.

My boss occasionally gets these files from imbeciles at the state level, and she opens them with TNEF's Enough. Life isn't long enough to try to explain the dead simple process outlined in Bik's link to some people...

When I was doing consulting work in the late 90's long distance over a dial-up connection, my computer-novice boss sent me a big e-mail attachment that took about 45 minutes to download.

Of course it was a Windows-specific file for which I didn't have the software to open.

I replied.
"I'm sorry. I don't have the software to read this file. I am returning it to you unopened."

It took another 45 minutes to send.
He never sent me an attachment I couldn't open again.
