ABS plastic containers?

I need to repair a Yakima roof box that had the area where the hinges mount torn. It is an ABS plastic lid. I've repaired the area using a combination of heat from a soldering iron, Acetone, and ABS cement. It looks very nice. However, there is no way I am going to be able to bolt the hinge back in and not have it tear itself back out. What I'd like to do is find a small 3"x3" square of ABS plastic and reinforce both the outside and the inside of the area.

As I was reading online most people just used ABS plastic from old jugs. I checked all my plastic bottles and none of them were both black and ABS. I'm trying to figure out what the cheapest thing I can buy that comes in a thick ABS bottle. Something like automotive coolant bottle, except mine are all white, and coolant isn't very cheap nor can I dump it down the drain.

So I'm trying to brainstorm and figure out what comes in a container like that...I may have to just randomly wander Home Depot or Walmart and pickup every black bottle I see.

ABS is not a common material for jugs and bottles, they are mostly PP, HDPE, LDPE and PETE. You may have better luck cutting pieces from a section of ABS drain pipe and flattening them with some heat.

Or if you need a thinner piece:

Was trying to avoid buying online as I'd like to wrap this up today, but those will work if I cannot find anything.

check if something like this is available at your local home depot or lowes, or perhaps you have another container store that sells items like this

Just buy something small (and inexpensive) that comes in almost impenetrable and uncutable plastic. Like a small SD card. The plastic will be clear which may work in your application.

I was thinking along similar lines (plexiglas or Lexan).

It is what it is.

A great idea.. I would use a wider surface area. And the above idea is excellent... flatten the section with a heat gun and mold it around the hinge area, then solvent glue that sucker down and seal the edges with melting.

I used this harbor freight heat gun to 'weld' an ABS bumper:

why isn't this warranteed by Yakima? Have you contacted them?

Just wondering about the wisdom of a jerry rigged repair to something in which you will carry loads on top of your car at highway speeds.

Because they don't cover accidental damage? This is just the hinge that lets you open and close the lid and hold it up. There is a separate locking mechanism that holds it down. This repair doesn't provide integrity. Just holds up the lid.
