Dealmac Forum nostalgia: IBM speakers from 17 years ago just bit the dust

My IBM speakers I got for a ridiculous deal from Staples for some silly deal just gave up the ghost. I recall buying this item with 3 stacked coupons in the era before online retailers competing with e-tailers knew what they were doing. They probably sold it for a loss.

I also reflected on how different my life is since I bought them. It seems like another life.

Grateful we have a place to find deals and share some humanity and humor in this crazy world.

Think of how many people around the world still have a pair of ancient crappy little speakers that came with a PC sitting on their desk.

What is the problem? Did they blow out? Did you try another power supply?

I need to get my 30+ year old Bose 301 speakers re-foamed. They still work, but the foam is toast. I looked at doing it myself, but found a place that will do it for like $30 a speaker, which seems like a fair price. I can see me messing them up pretty good, if I tried to do it myself.

I remember lusting after Bose 301s. I still have some JBL standing speakers from right after college. Still sounding great 35 years later.

RgG, I've been told those speakers are very time intensive to re-foam but the materials are cheap. $30 per speaker sounds too good to be true though. Tread carefully.

I have a pair of Apple Pro Speakers... beige with the rainbow Apple logo on top. They're actually pretty good speakers. Got them in a box full of computer stuff at a surplus auction from the local university about 20 years ago. For a time I had some cool looking speakers with subwoofer (I don't even remember the brand), but they died less than 2 years after I bought them. Then for a while I was using a pair of studio monitors. But they were very bulky. So for nostalgia sake, I still use the Apple speakers.

I had the beige Apple Design powered Speakers II, but I always wanted the black version that had the silver apple logo:

I had computer speakers with a subwoofer from Cambridge Soundworks hooked up to my office PowerMac 7500 back in the day. After normal biz hours, I listened to music. During the day, they made my various alert sounds much more impressive, thanks to a system enhancement that I still miss, which was called Sounds4Fun. It allows you to assign sounds to many system events. You could use sound suitcases so that an event like emptying the trash played sounds randomly from your suitcase of trash emptying sounds. I had sound suitcases for many events. I bought some sound sets (2001, Star Trek TNG) and digitized a bunch myself from my Blakes 7 VHS tapes using a Farallon MacRecorder hooked up to my IIci at home.

I had the mistaken notion that our IT guy knew at least a little about Macs, but realized he didn't when he heard the speakers and said, "Oh, did you install a sound card?" (It was also a clue when he thought I would need to get an Ethernet card for the 7500.)

I have a set of speakers from Cambridge hooked up to my KVM at home: I think they are the MediaWorks model.

I have the 1990 version of these that are just being released:

Mine are still going strong and there is a reason I never "upgraded" to the newer style speakers.

I used to have a closet shelf stuffed with them back when I sold software set up computers . Hardly any one wanted speakers at the time, especially crappy ones. Some of them weren't too shabby. Multimedia speakers - ooh what value added !

I have a set of 15 year old speakers that have sat unused for a few years upstairs waiting to be given away. Also got them here for about $20, IIRC. Great deal.

Your speakers can probably be fixed! Great post topic! go!

Where is a link to the thread from Dealmac? I think we would have recommended something else as a better overall value.

No matter what I hook them too they give off a whining OOOOOOOOOOOMH sound. I have fiddled with everything and nothing works.

I watched a couple of YouTube videos on it and I think it isn't too bad, if you have the right tools, and know what you are doing, which I don't. The guy I talked to seemed to be pretty familiar with them and the company has been around for a while, but I will get a better feel for it, when I actually get by there.

That was an excellent set! I recall selling many during my retail days at a Mac shop.

could just be a fried capacitor, but you'd have to dissect the board out of it. I say: fix it! let live!

Yeah, likely a power filter cap, easy to spot a bad one. Not too much trouble to replace either assuming any skill with a soldering iron.

Thanks for the suggestions but I don't have the skill or time to do this. It had become a unit on a secondary machine mainly for music. I plan on replacing it with something else or just not replacing it at all.

An electronics repair shop can do this for you, probably for under $10.

Monsoon! That was the one that crapped out on me after just a couple of years. I gave them to a friend who had the exact same model that had died on him. He was going to try to make one good set out of them. I never did ask him if he was able to.

Ive got the 700s, where the stands detach and they could be mounted on the side of your screen. The sub is kinda gone, but still sorta works -- I use them all day everyday. =)

A zillion years ago (probably more than 17) I got a set of Altec-Lansing ACS48 speakers. At the time, they were the best sounding speakers I could find from back when CompUSA had a bunch of demo speakers set up with a switch so you could listen to them all and compare. The ACS48s lasted enough years before they died that I couldn't find a replacement.

I ended up getting the Logitech Z-2300 set that I'm still using. They sound pretty good but I still think the ACS48s were the best desktop speakers I've ever heard (better than Bose, Klipsch, etc.).

As for the Z-2300s, IIRC, there were some high-end brands, maybe Klipsch or something, that sounded as good but not actually better despite the higher price.
