Apple Inc. is planning to release a version of its smartwatch later this year that can connect directly to cellular networks, a move designed to reduce the device’s reliance on the iPhone, people familiar with the matter said. ...Intel Corp. will supply the LTE modems for the new Watch, according to another person familiar with the situation.

That's terrific. Now I can see thousands of people walking up the street saluting me with their arms in the air and wrists to their heads. Should spike deodorant sales if nothing else.

Will this cause the next revolution in cosmetic surgery?

I Message quite a bit using my Watch. Having cellular would make it easier to leave the IPhone in the car while running into a shop. I do not take phone calls on my Watch.

My wife likes to jog. If the Watch were cellular she could stream Pandora to her AirPods without taking the phone. I can see this being useful and cellular companies should love another $10/mo.

It's going to require an extra long earphone/mic cable.

I just might get one of those.

We got a Project Fi phone to go to Europe and my wife likes the phone enough that she wants to change to that phone and service. We'll port her over when her PagePlus yearly account expires in a couple of months. Project Fi offers free sims that use the data from the cell account. So, we'll likely be able to use the new watch without having a separate account and cost.

Add a pulse/ox function and a short throw projector and call it an iEverything?

Steve G, your picture gave me a chuckle (which I can really use right now).
