Should I be worried if my body temp never seems to reach 98º

When I was a kid, I ran hot. My mom wouldn't grant me an off school day unless I was around 100º. But the older I get, the colder I seem to get. I think I broke my last mercury thermometer in the 80s and never replaced it.

A medical pro takes my temp every now and then and it always seemed low.

I'm now dealing with a confusing set of symptoms - I appear to be suffering from back spasms, but I'm 98% sure that it's a lung infection. (I've been through this once before)

I had a phone appt on SAT (all I could get) and without the ability to listen to my lungs, all symptoms point to muscle spasms and he offered suggestions along those lines. Muscle relaxants, anti-inflamitories, cold hot, etc. and told me to watch for a spike in temperature.

I bought a thermometer and as I suspected, I'm running cold all the time. I've measured 5x in the last two days and have seen readings from 97.3 - 97.9. And I was feeling feverish yesterday.

What do you think Dr Phorum?

(I've got an appt for a dr IN THE FLESH tomorrow)

Take a rectal temp for accuracy.

As we all know, 98.6 is common and considered 'ideal'. But lots and lots of people will vary a degree. I run 97.9. My wife happily runs 98.8. So in our bedroom I have a fan blowing on me year around and she has four layers of blankets.

98.6 is a suggestion, not a rule and thermometers aren't all that accurate at the best of times. I run a little cool, myself.

It's also possible to run a low temp when you've got a thyroid problem or diabetes. Get your TSH or T4 and A1C checked on your next blood test.

...You need a history to show whether that's your normal temp range as an adult. Spot-check when you're feeling healthy.

I'm not a doctor but the statistician in me suggests that temperatures +/0.75° of the "normal" 98.6° are not an indication of a problem.

That's not to say there isn't a problem...just that the body temperature isn't a significant indication.

Like if you have no oil in your car, the battery gauge is not likely to show anything amiss.

I run low too. Hypothyroid so that may have something to do with it.

The 98.6 of old seems to have been supplanted with 98.2. And if you're old, it's lower: [www.health.harvard.edu]

97.4 here, most times.

The weird part is explaining to people that I am actually feeling feverish when I read 99.6.

I don't even know what my normal or average temperature is.

I've only taken my temperature when I'm not feeling well, so it's always been above "average" then.

What's the standard deviation for temperature?

The only reason to worry is if you are in an ER and the staff points out that you have no fever because your temperature is a lovely 98.6 and when your kids explain that your temperature is never that high they refuse to listen and just keep saying that the patient is not feverish. Just like when my father died of his post-op non-existent infections that couldn't possibly be there because he had no fever.

+/- 1ºF

your temperature isn't static either. It can be a little lower in the morning when you first get up. Or not. Just as your BP will fluctuate.

Mrs. cbelt3 runs an average 97 degrees F. When she hits 99, she's already running 2 degrees of fever. Which confuses medical personnel no end.
