Never thought too much of the iPad but...

I am a true believer now! I have had an iPad since they were born. Gave away eventually to my kid from none use. Well, I gave up my mini and bought a gold new iPad a year ago..I hardly use my MBP now! I have conquered many functions on the pad now and use it more than a computer! Viva iPad!

It's great for a lot of things. Just don't try to write your memoirs on it.

Still needs a keyboard. Do you have a keyboard for it?

I've always just used one of the bluetooth keyboards that came with my iMacs. Works great.

I use my iMac for work, but think the iPad is plenty for what most folks want a computer for (internet, email, photos).

Any bluetooth keyboard on the planet works with it.

I'm curious about real-world experiences with the cover/keyboard devices from Apple and Logitech. Last time I was at an Apple store a salesperson suggested that the Apple version was lighter while the Logitech version had a better feel.

iOS 11 (coming soon) will have lots of great new features that will make iPads even more productive.

Crummy software for long documents? If you would need an external keyboard to make the process tolerable, why not just write it on a computer with a decent sized screen and probably better software?

Maybe you dont have a full comptuer? Maybe you like to write on the park? Or on a train?

Pages, google docs both free, or MS Word.

My kid might be able to text on her iPhone faster than i can type on my keyboard. =)

All Im saying, is dont knock it till u try it. emoticon-animal-004

And yes, iOS 11 -- watch the last keynote on it, its really looking more like a "desktop" rather than iOS to[p/

Love my original retina iPad! Ethyl has Logitech keyboard case for hers, but I've learned how to use my big fingers in the screen keys. Only problem is I recently dropped it a few times and screen is cracked all over. I want a new one. Just which one? Leaning towards mini.

This is how much of the world is heading. My wife only brings her iPad when she travels, borrows my Mac when she absolutely needs to. But it's very infrequent these days.

If the iPad would connect to external monitors like a Mac, it could replace a Mac for me for many things.

I agree, at least if you are trying to use the on-screen keyboard. I have to limit my keyboarding use on my iPad 3 because my shoulder wants to tighten up something fierce, probably because I am a one finger typist on the iPad.

I'm generally happy with my iPad but, I HATE doing email on it. The full keyboard & big matte screen on my 17"MBP have spoiled me for trying to get anything useful done on a virtual keyboard & small screen.

The Gorillaz Made an Entire Album with an iPad

When asked to talk about the background of the Gorillaz 2010 album The Fall, an album almost entirely created with an iPad, frontman Damon Albarn told Music Express, “I had a month on tour in America and everyday I had at least three hours of emptiness to fill. So I filled them.”

Though the concept of making an album with such a specific mode of production could be seen as a gimmick, The Fall doesn't feel the least bit hokey. Instead of sounding like a cheap, corporate-backed effort, one gets the sense that Albarn used the convenience and portability of the iPad to help him channel the emotions he experienced while on tour.

“I guess it’s my love letter to America,” he told The Guardian. “I used to be baffled by this place, and I guess I still am in some ways…But right now, with all that’s going on, this is a good place to be and this has been a great tour.”

Despite describing himself as a “technophobe and Luddite”, Albarn told NME, “I fell in love with my iPad as soon as I got it, so I’ve made a completely different kind of record.” The scope of apps used on the project indicates how user friendly many of the music apps on iOS are, even for self-described “Luddites.” The Fall utilizes 22 apps in total, incorporating everything from the popular Dub Siren Pro to lesser known programs.

Like I've said since 2011 when the first iPad debuted...
The iPad is not the "perfect" all around replacement for a laptop. It depends on what you're doing!
If you're MOSTLY consuming media, web browsing, and getting some "light" work done - it's a fantastic tool.
Can it do heavier lifting? Yes... but you'll find it more cumbersome than doing that work on a computer (with certain exceptions).
Do a lot of typing? Useable... but not the perfect tool.

I use my iPad for 95% of my at-home daily browsing, emails, etc. There is not much I do on a daily/weekly basis on my 2008 iMac any more. But for the things that I DO use it for, the iPad COULD NOT do them.

I don't see myself getting rid of my iPhone, iPad and some sort of desktop Mac any time soon.

YES YES YES. Agreed. I cannot part with any apple product even when I don't use it without heart pounding.
