Tesla tops off your tank for Irma

"Some Florida Tesla owners were surprised to see their vehicles were granted extended range capabilities thanks to an over-the-air update quietly pushed out by the company in advance of Hurricane Irma's arrival.

In an effort to streamline production, Tesla includes the same batteries in many of its models, but charges an additional fee to "unlock" the higher available capacity. Customers with the lower 60 kilowatt-hour range, which the company no longer offers in favor of higher options, were upgraded to the battery's full 75 kWh potential through a software update this week.

A Tesla spokesperson confirmed to FLORIDA TODAY that certain vehicles in the area were temporarily updated to help with evacuations.

While the jump from 60 to 70 kWh isn't astronomical, the boost does allow Floridians with the Model S sedan, for example, to achieve about 230 miles of range at highway speeds with air conditioning use.

Florida drivers will have access to the expanded capacity until Sept. 16."

Great move on many levels by Tesla.
Reports on the forums, were that the SuperChargers were working and not overwhelmed. Some owners made their personal home charging locations available to other owners.

Tesla is also rolling out Urban charging stations.

Tesla is also in construction on 2 different, 40 stall, SuperCharger stations.

They can't, only PxxD models can become Ludicrous due to a larger, higher performance rear motor.

Interesting how lots of people are interpreting this negatively, assuming that Tesla has somehow been cheating their customers out of battery power that they should have access to.

People love to play the victim. My favorite example is Han Solo in Empire. "It's not my fault!"

The way those batteries operate, greater load and wear at full capacity use vs. the reduced. I'd also think they probably had a different 'tested grade' that met the 75KW level vs. the units going into the 60KW to ensure for their rated spec there was reliability over the expected course. Can't control what people will think - but I have to assume it's not the Tesla owners feeling they were cheated as much as folks that just like to make a stink out of stuff making noise on a really good thing Tesla did to help folks get out of harms way. Kudos to Elon!

The complainers are probably driving big SUVs anyway.

Tesla built identical cars and used software to limit one model to 60kwh. For a few thousand $ they'd unlock the rest of the battery capacity to 75kwh. Most customer opted to pay the extra few grand to get the full 75kwh which is why Tesla canceled the 60kwh model. No one wanted it. What they did for Irma was a laudable action, but it only impacted at most a few dozen owners.

This does point out a serious problem with EVs though in that there are a finite number of charging stations available. They can't all charge at the same time. Then again, how often do 5+ million people pickup and leave at the same time?

Apple has done similar things in the past. Anyone remember the firmware updater to get faster Wireless speed on the MacBook Pros? They shipped it with a faster card than the specs said and had it software limited to the slower speeds. Later down the road they released an update to enable it.

Yes, but the difference there (as I recall) was that a customer could not pay for the extra functionality at the time of purchase. Either way, you don't get more than you paid for.
