Any big problem if I paint just the first floor of our house exterior?

I'm just tired of our house color, and I'm not ready yet to hire a painter or rent scaffolding/manlift/etc, and I'm. It going to paint the second and third floors on a ladder. So I'm thinking about washing and painting the first floor. Which looks pretty doable with some combination of a roller with and extension pole and maybe a 12 foot ladder-I'm willing to go that high.

Any big downside to this? I figure we.can match the paint closely enough when we get around to doing the top two floors...

Thanks!

Skip the rollers and go with an airless sprayer. Faster and better coverage. Prep is always top priority. I don't see a problem if you can paint match and the colors arent too far off from original. Your two tone house might get complaints from the neighbors.

The siding material and condition will have an effect on the paint you use and what sort of prep. There are addded chemicals you need to add to roll or spray for different materials. To avoid the dreaded three year peel off. A pro isn't really a huge cost adder and the results will be better.

Your plan sucks. Your house will look ridiculous and will require a total repainted. Rent a power scaffold or hire a painter when you have the cash. Of course, if your home is located in a rural area behind a barn and you live alone, go for it!

What about a contrasting color so it looks deliberate?

....or can you use a shade of the same color.....for example, if have grey, can you use a darker shade or lighter for the 1st floor instead......

That would work OK with a 2 story, but 3? Upsets the symmetry in my minds eye.

Two downsides – one real, one speculative.

1. It's generally a good idea to "paint down."
If you do the bottom first and then work your way up, you will almost certainly have touch-up work to do below, especially if you use a roller rather than carefully taping and spraying.

2. If you're thinking about taking action based on the emotion of being tired of your house color, how long will you be able to live with the partial paint job? What if you get done with the bottom floor and the results aren't as satisfying as you hoped?

Rule of Thirds works in photography why not house painting? :-)

OK. Maybe it is a sky blue house and he can paint the first floor green.

Oh, there is absolutely no way the paint will match.
