PC -> Mac file format funkyness

I have an ext drive with a bunch of VLC formatted movies and music (not sure what app was used to rip), and they all read and play just fine. But on the old iMac (10.4.11), I can read and watch the movies but the music folders will not read. Any thoughts? If anything I would have guessed it would be the opposite.

Any chance the music has some sort of DRM? Can you copy the music files to the iMac, what are the file extensions? Is the drive FAT32 or NTFS?

I last used 10.5.x four years ago and 10.4.x is at least two years longer than that, so I don't have any troubleshooting tips for iTunes or VLC apps being that old.

Alright, trying it on my mbp (2009), running 10.6.: reveals that it's the slow processing power of the iMac.
