iPhone 7 Plus or 8 Plus? Let's see which is the better value.

So now that we've all had time to sleep on it and digest....

Seeing that this is a Tips and Deals forum, which is the better value?
The base config iPhone 7 Plus or 8 Plus?

7 Plus 32GB $670
8 Plus 64GB $800

Aside from aesthetics, a bump in memory and a bump in the processor, the major differences between the 7 Plus and 8 Plus are:

wireless charging
upgraded camera sensor
better trade/resale value

Are the above features worth an extra $130.
Hmmmmm......

3d,

I'd say it depends. I use my phone for photos these days. So, a better camera is always a worthwhile feature. Wireless charging sounds great. The fact that it isn't based on an Apple proprietary system is a nifty bonus.

At home, I have a charging station set up on one of my counters. There are ends for charging iDevices with lightning connections, devices for USB micro connections and an end for charging devices with Apple 30-pin connections. For my phone, I connect it to the correct end and leave it on the counter. I do the same with every other devices.

Wireless charging nixes the need for the lightning cable. That's nifty. As more and more places have wireless charging stations, it reduces the need to keep a lightning cable in my bag. 'course, I'd still carry one just because but it's nice knowing I may not have to use it.

But, on the other hand, charging pads require space. Right now, I connect the phone to the lightning end and place it on the counter. If my phone isn't on the counter, something else is in its place. Or, if something is there, I place my phone on it. A wireless charging pad takes up surface space. For many, that's surface space is a premium. That could be a problem for some people.

Camera and extra storage are likely worth it. Won't know for sure until the cameras are compared - the iP7 was not a lot better than the iPhone 6S camera.

I think wireless charging is the game changer.

Yeah you used to pay $100 just for a doubling of storage. On that perspective, the extras are certainly worth it.

The 8 and 8 Plus will survive 1 more round of iOS obsolescence down the road. What is that worth is the equation? [forums.macresource.com]

I'm still at a 5c-32G. Any new phone has to double the storage, so the base 7+ isn't in the running. I'm waiting to see what may be available with Apple refurbs, once the post announcement hubbub dies down.

IF you keep an iPhone long enough for that to happen. I'd guess most folks don't.

The 64Gb of the 8 alone over the 32Gb of the 7 is worth it. I wouldn't buy a 32Gb iPhone today.

Of course. How silly of me to think that someone will keep it beyond 2 years. ROTFL

Not a chance... Now, an Apple Refurbed 7 shows up in the 128gb flavor for the right price, I'm pullin' the trigger! Otherwise it's an 8 after I satisfy my need for a new iPad. Well, if that 7 shows up in the next few days, I may re-prioritize the two.

$130 over 2 years is $5-ish a month. Can you swing that?

Thats not really the case for everyone. 48 GB left on my 64 GB phone. Would have gladly paid less for a 32 GB version, but not in stock.

To expand on your list a bit, the iPhone 8 Plus has the following advances over the iPhone 7 Plus:

  • faster processor
  • twice the storage
  • "wireless" charging
  • True Tone display
  • True Tone flash with slow sync (for foreground lighting with background exposure)
  • better camera sensor
  • studio lighting effects
  • 4k video at 60 fps
  • 1080p slow-motion video at 240fps

…and, as you mentioned, better aesthetics and resale value.

In my opinion, the iPhone 8 Plus is worth the extra $130.

32GB vs. 64GB is not much of a contest, if you tend to use the camera a lot and listen to music. I have about 10GB of space left on my 64GB iPhone 6, only because I regularly move images off the phone and don't load as much music as I'd like to.

I own the 7+ and it's a great phone.

If I was buying today, I'd get the 8+ over the 7+. $130 more for the many advantages stated above is clearly worth it, IMO.

Paul, if an AT&T phone works for you and you can handle 32GB, the iPhone SE deal at $140 is a terrific upgrade over the 5S.
