Greetings from Mission Hospital. I'm here and it doesn't look good...
Posted by: GeneL
Date: September 18, 2017 10:27PM
I was having a problem with constipation and the severe pain finally caused me to go to the Emergency room.

The problem turned out to be that I had what they called a redundant colon and that it was
twisted which was causing a blockage.

MY GI specialist performed a procedure and got me some relief. Unfortunately, it appears that the relief is only temporary. I will have to have surgery to remove a section of my colon.

Because of the condition of my kidney and my heart this surgery would be very risky. I have been feeling depressed and frightened that I won't survive the operation.

There's a lot more that I want to say, but I don't feel well enough to write any more right.

As always, thanks for your thoughts.

How sure are they that you need surgical intervention? Have you voiced your concerns about surgery?

...To my knowledge, most people with redundant colon can deal with it via special diet. (Tho a friend of a friend who suffered with it for years benefited greatly from surgery. No more pain after decades of it. Turned a shy introvert into a partying extrovert.)

Best wishes for a full recovery - whatever course of treatment you decide on. Do you have an advocate or at least someone to talk to while you're there to help make rational decisions? I've been there. It really helps.

I woke up this morning, feeling like my head was on fire, and I but after I had a good poop I felt better.

The first thing that I did after that was to check in with the forum.

After looking at this thread, I browse a bit and read a post by Schpark? In the International Talk like a Pirate Day thread.

His signature was a quote from Ztirffritz:

"Without death, life would lose much of its meaning. My goal is to live in such a manner that I alter world in some fundamental way before I'm gone. As I get older and watch my son grow I realize I've already achieved my goal." - Ztirffritz"

Thanks for that thought! Being in the hospital and feeling apprehensive about my future, I have been thinking about things like that and last night my son came to visit me. He looked so beautiful to me and Ztirffritz' quote was just the right thing to lift my spirits.

After he left, Adam, my son texted me a picture of us together. It was a beautiful picture and I wish I could post it to this thread, but I don't know how.

I am so happy to be here with my friends, right now. Thanks again to all of you.

Andy Borowitz, the New Yorker humorist, wrote an essay about his experience in the hospital with a twisted colon and the surgey required. Maybe not a good read (or listen, there's video online) for you at this moment since it was a frightening time for him.

I bring this up because he got through it despite everything looking very bleak for a while.

My attitude is going to be that you will get through this, too. I will hold you in the Light.

I am sure that your doctors have considered the fact that you have other ongoing health concerns when they recommended surgery.

I'm sure they must believe that surgery is the least bad of all the bad options available if this is what they think you should do,

Good luck and best wishes.

I have to add that I have coffee on the breakfast tray that they just brought to me! For some unexplained reason, I only have been getting a poor kind of tea until now.

I am so happy to have coffee, even the less than quality that I'm used to...

... and I have been pooping successfully several times this morning!

I do feel pretty normal right now, but I don't know what is going to happen next? I was told that I needed the operation to remove a section of my overlong colon, but I wonder if I can avoid that, now that I have been able to have BM's again? I will know more when I have a chance to ask my doctor about it.

Fingers crossed, I am enjoying my cream of wheat, a dish that I haven't had since I was a little boy.

I will post what I learn when I see my doctor, later today.

BTW, they just brought a coffee refill to me and it's the coffee they make here on the floor. Yay! What a difference.

Hmmm? I'm not exactly sure how to interpret Steve G's remark, but thanks, I think???

Yes, I thanks for the thought, however it was expressed, I will take it with "pleasure."

Please forgive all the extra edits. I am using a new keyboard called "Swift Key" and until now, it has been amazing. It has been so accurately predicting what I want to write, that I just have to tap the predicted words. Strangely, it suddenly began to inject words that I didn't want. I wonder how I can fix this glitch, because I have been appreciative of the previous accuracy.

If you're not in a medical emergency situation (and you get out of the hospital), you might want to get a second opinion. Partial colectomy in someone with risk factors sounds kind of aggressive to me if it really is just "redundant colon".

Best wishes.
