What is your favorite SciFi movie?
Posted by: davemchine
Date: September 27, 2017 02:44PM
As I looked through my iTunes movie list I noticed very few five star SciFi movies. I'd like to pump that number up a bit. So what is your favorite?

One movie I DO have in my list is Star Trek Generations which I haven't watched in years. I played a bit of it during lunch today and wow I love it just as much as I used to.

That's a really tough call, I like so many so much.

Hmmm.

I think of all the ones I have seen, 2001: A Space Odyssey blew my mind the most the first time I saw it.

Unlike many "geeks" that I associate with (including my wife), I'm just not into SciFi. I sorta like Star Trek TNG. Never watched the original series or any of the others though. I've seen the original 3 Star Wars movies, plus Phantom Menace (which made me NOT want to watch the next two). I've seen the two new Star Wars, mainly because my son is REALLY into Star Wars. Other than that, I just not into it. One of my co-workers was incredulous when he asked if I liked the new "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie and I told him I hadn't even seen the first one.

I have tons...
Picking ONE favorite is tough.

Blade Runner
Star Wars (all of 'em)
Star Treks ( II, III, IV, VI, Generations, First Contact, after that, they're meh...)
2010: Odyssy Two
Alien and Aliens (the rest, meh...)

These are not necessarily the "best" movies - but they are the ones I enjoy. There are many others I appreciate as better movies, but these are the ones I like.

I'm sure I've forgotten at least a dozen.

How about Repo Man?

I'm seeing early comments on Blade Runner 2049. Some are saying it's better than the original.

Remember Rollerball?

Forbidden Planet...... Ann Francis.. the ethereal girl in the next door... planet.
2001... saw that when it came out in the theater. I even had a postcard reservation for a seat on the first Pan Am Space Clipper.
Alien.. saw the original pre-screening with all the missing scenes (And director and some cast members in the audience for a Q&A), it helped understand what happened to the victims ("Kill us... please....")
Dark Star... (Bomb, get back in the bomb bay !)
The Last Starfighter... some of the first full CGI..
Tron.. the original
Blade Runner.... Like tears... in rain.... (...the dove flies...)
Even numbered Star Trek movies... KHAAAAAN !!!

At the time when I saw it, Star Wars Ep IV was the best SF movie i'd ever seen.

In retrospect...none really stand out. All good and bad in various ways.

Fr the most part, I like 1950's SciFi; some that immediately come to mind:
Destination Moon (1950)
When World's Collide (1951)
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951, not the remake)
This Island Earth (1955)
Forbidden Planet (1956)
20 Million Miles to Earth (1957)
Plan 9 From Outer Space (1959)

ok, there are a few later ones too --
Silent Running (1972)
The Fifth Element (1997)
Moon (2009)

If I had to pick just one? That's hard, go classic (The Day the Earth Stood Still); go dark (Silent Running), or go fun (Fifth Element)? It would depend on my mood at the time, but for today it would be Silent Running.

Many to list, but the one that stuck with me recently is Ex Machina. Outstanding, and true Sci-Fi. I agree about Moon too! Great stuff.

Dark City

Gattaca

Children of Men

Movies like Star Wars - I wouldn't even call them sci-fi. They're space westerns; speculative science doesn't play much of a role in them.

Have many that have already been mentioned but I remembered this one. Saw it as a kid in a theater when it first came out with my big brother while staying at my Grandmother's house for the summer (she lived in a small town). Scared the crap out of me. We walked home from the theater and I just knew that creature was going to get me sooner or later.

There are too many to name just one! smiley-shocked003

That said, Planet of the Apes was really something when it came out in 1968. I was just 10 years old, and a budding SciFi fan.

Wowser! When Chuck Heston had his first look at a Gorilla riding a horse and shooting the humans...That scene, and the music playing, Whoa!! It was just chilling to watch.

Another Heston film from that era, The Omega Man, was right up there too.

Great movies!

I love Star Trek II - The Wrath of Kahn and Star Wars V - The Empire Strikes Back

2010: Odyssey 2 is probably my wife's favorite SciFi flick.

I have far more 5 star SciFi books than movies...

Haven't parsed this list but it seems like a nice supplement to what we had going here: [forums.macresource.com]

With all the wacky, obviously NOT best scifi suggestions above, I'm surprised that under current circumstances Running Man didn't come up! (Mind you many of those suggestions were no doubt on behalf of the excellent books that spawned the movies.)

Hoping for a sendup of Asimov's Foundation series as a studio seeks to milk it a la Tolkien's LotR.

Wow, thanks for all the great suggestions. Many of these movies I have seen but several I have NOT! I have added them to my watchlist. Also, I did think of a SciFi movie that made my five star list that is pretty rare. It is a russion movie from the 80's and is all subtitles.

Kin-dza-dza!

Danged typos! Forgot that I put them up there already. Grrrr!

And, yes, they were good and definitely much better than lots of even the good stuff that's been released over the years.

Robert, nice list. I also like many of those. Like I said earlier, there are too many to name just one.

And it just occurred to me, no one has mentioned The Time Machine! Now that I think of it, one of my all time favs. The original version, of course.

When I was putting my list together, I thought about both The Time Machine and War of the Worlds (both originals, not remakes).. but ultimately neither ever really excited me. I also left off monster flicks (though I also love the classic 50's monsters). My choices had to involve space travel to qualify as pure Scifi. That is why I left some truly great shows off.
