Seeking food advice. My wife opened a quart box of Trader Joe's chicken stock this past Saturday and poured out about a fourth of it. She spaced out after she put the lid back on, and put it in our pantry instead of the fridge. She poured the rest of it into a stock pot tonight, then remembered why is wasn't a full quart. Is it fit for human consumption? Dog consumption? Vulture consumption?

You heated the stock past 180 degrees, right?
You kept it there for more than a few minutes?

You'll be fine.. eat it. The salt will inhibit some nasties, the heat kills the rest.

But really, is it worth a second thought? A quart of stock. $2? $3? Forget about wasting food, how much is gastric distress worth?

You'll blow through that much in TP if it all goes to crap.

It is worth thinking about how and why food "spoils." The broth was processed in such a way that it was clean and stable at room temperature. The main concern would be whether opening the box was likely to introduce some bug that could grow and create a health hazard. She poured liquid out. Is it likely that anything else got in during this process? Not too likely, unless there were hurricane level winds in the kitchen, or if she spit directly into the box.
