That monster should retain Apple support for 20 years. 18 cores, 128GB

Remember how when you were little
you could just rip off your diaper and
just run around naked and everyone
thought it was so cute and funny?

Anyway, I need bail money.

Any guesses on what the starting price of the 18 core model is?

Another new Apple computer for me to completely ignore. Sigh. But it can probably hide behind a skinny yardstick when viewed from the side.

LOTS of firepower!

It looks fantastic.

i love the idea of finally giant-sized gpu.

of course, i do wish it was built like a mac pro with swappable hard drives and upgradeable graphic cards but that form factor is not coming back so you deal with the tools offered.

i doubt highly i would go the "all-in" route.

but for me cutting 4k video via fcpx or resolve, an imac pro would be a wonderful addition.

be well.

Another item for Apple to push because they can't seem to update the models they "deem" are important to them (Mac Pro, mini). We probably won't see them for year. Just another case of Apple spending more and more time on things I care less and less about...

Yeah, I don't consider a machine that I can't upgrade (hard drives, GPU, etc) to be a "pro" model.

I have a Mac Pro with 6 hard drives (4 bays, secondary optical slot, PCI card), easily upgradable memory (don't know about iMac "Pro"... haven't checked), upgraded video card, USB 3 card in PCI slot. That's a pro model. When it came out, USB 3 was available, but not built in. So I added a card. 4K displays weren't available. But I can add a card and run one. I had an eSATA card, but I took it out when I got the USB 3 card. When Apple decides next year to add some new, wonderful port (and you know they will!), you'll be SOL.

500Watts in that puppy.

Seems like an intermediate product really - take the guts and put them in an upgradable, modular box and you actually have a Pro machine.

It's visually stunning and will be a good fit for a lot of users - maybe not the traditional 'professionals.'

If there are heat-induced failures, will anyone be surprised?

I hope they make the wireless keyboard available separately, finally a new wireless keyboard from Apple with a numeric keyboard.

So, you're not a professional unless you like to tinker? Hmm…

No - a 'pro' makes money off their hardware and lives where hardware constraints are often a major issue. Such individuals want to know that their investment is going to grow with capability as their functions require, and not slowly decade due to complete lack of attention to hardware.

Most 'pros' I'm referring to write the code and have a team build the machines.

Apple already said they are developing a new "modular" Mac Pro to replace the trash can. Hopefully it sees the light in 2018, but who really knows.

The iMac Pro is a bone to throw to the professional audience in the meantime. Personally, I'm still a bit torn on it — where most of my designers would do just fine on a modern iMac, most of them would be well served by the high-end existing 5K model, don't necessarily need the DDR RAM, more processor cores, etc.

Maybe I could find a few usage scenarios that could justify an iMac Pro, but I'll probably keep waiting to see what the "Modular" Mac Pros end up looking like.
