Question about on street parking in NY
Posted by: space-time

As mentioned earlier, my car is broken somewhere in JFK area. it is on a street that has no signs regarding parking.

I hear on TV in the morning that "alternate parking rules are in effect", I am not sure if that is only in Manhattan or also in Queens/Jamaica.

Where the car is, it seems to be a secondary street with no parking sign whatsoever. I looked on both sides of the street, no signs regarding parking. Only about children, school bus stop, etc.

On the main street perpendicular to this street, there is a sing with parking restrictions on Mondays 11 AM-3 PM, I think this is for street cleaning. But on the secondary street, no signs at all.

I am wondering if there is some other not posted regulation that I am not aware of. Such as not more than X days. Or out of state cars not allowed, etc.

I need to come up with a plan to tow/repair/sell/donate the car, and i need a few days to come up with such plan. I wonder if I will get any parking tickets.

As a side note: when we left last week, I left the car on the main street, and I saw a police yellow tape on the secondary street and some guy taking photos with a really long lens (500mm or more?). I didn't pay much attention.

This afternoon when I went to retrieve items from the car, the yellow tape is gone, but across from my car there is a memorial, a couple of photos and some pages posted on the fence, and about a hundred candles on the sidewalk, although at 4 PM none were lit. I think there was a recent crime over there. So you get the idea of what place I found.

Buy an NYPD baseball cap and leave it on the dash. Problem solved.

I once parked in a spot that looked like it allowed overnight parking. Next morning i came out to find a cop writing a ticket. I said there isn't a sign here, and he replied that someone must have taken it down because there was one at the other end of the block—where I hadn't gone or seen it. So I got a ticket.

They do that in DC.

Your car is not in Kansas anymore.
You will get a ticket, with Jersey plates, probably, several.

and if you lucky you might get towed.

The good news is that you probably do not have to pay your tickets,

unless you registered the car under your real name....

Abandon it on the cross bronx expressway
It should be stripped and burned in an hour

Alternate street side rules definitely apply in Queens but you should not have to guess - there should be signs.

dk,

Definitely. And, there are areas in Queens where alternate side of the parking doesn't apply at all. You can park on either side of the street at any time. Lived on and adjacent to streets like that. It was great. smiling smiley

You people get your streets cleaned? I don't even have sidewalks, and I live in Seattle. You'd think with all the major businesses based here, the tax base could afford sidewalks.

Your streets got cleaned by all the rain last night. ;)

You don't have sidewalks because you haven't paid for them. Measures have come up on the ballot to give specific neighborhoods sidewalks. It would increase the property taxes to cover them, and their future maintenance. But the residents vote them down.

I'm actually a little irritated about it because now some of those neighborhoods are getting sidewalks anyway. I pay for sidewalks, and funds are being pulled away from repairing mine to putting new ones in neighborhoods that haven't paid for them.

That said, it's messed up that with all the taxes we already collect, we need more just to pay for sidewalks.

Too bad that the Powers That Be give away the farm to be able to say we are the home of Amazon, and we get nothing in return, and the city has been permanently messed up.

I would say it's more like the powers that be blow the money on things like coloring crosswalks for celebrations than for safety. We take plenty of money from companies, probably more than their "fair share", which is why Boeing left and Amazon is looking to put a HQ somewhere else.

As a reminder, we live in a state that chose 3% of $0 over 2% of $80-90 billion, annually.
