Hello from the hospital
Posted by: CJsNvrUrly
Date: November 13, 2017 07:12AM
I just want to tell everyone I’ve been in the hospital since November 1.
I’ve been diagnosed with microscopic polyangiitis with granulomatosis. Some rare autoimmune thing. Seems like that’s my specialty—rare disorders. (My past diagnoses include hypersensitivity pneumonitis and mycobacterium marinum.)
Anyway, I don’t know what it all means, but I’m responding to treatment really well.
I’d love to hear from y’all. - Caryl

Sorry to hear that you are stuck in the hospital. I just looked up "microscopic polyangiitis with granulomatosis" and it didn't clarify much for me. But it's great that treatment is going well.

What were the symptoms?

Get well soon! Hope the docs figure out how to treat. I relate to what you're going through, just got out of hospital after 8 day stay for heart. Yeah, that is a real mouthful, whatever it is!

Best wishes and a reminder that (unless you've got severe restrictions) hospitals allow outside food. Soup or a burger or a bowl of noodles from a favorite restaurant can really make a difference during a long stay.

Hope you are home soon. As someone said, get a friend or family member to bring you some outside food, if you aren't on a restricted diet.

Hope you get to go home soon. I spent 18 days in the hospital last year (13 days the first time, 5 days for the followup three months later). I was actually a little scared to go home at the end of the first stay, but was so glad when I got home. For the second stay, I couldn't wait to go home.

Hope you have good insurance... the hospital bill alone for my stays came to just shy of $300K. That was just the "room and board" part.... no doctor's fees, lab fees, etc. Thankfully my catastrophic max for the year was $9K. And that's just the stuff they covered. There was probably another $5K of "non-covered" expenses that I had to shell out. And I'm still getting bills, 16 months later.

Ick! That's a long time in a hospital bed. I hope you were well enough to at least roam about a bit. My last stay was for 10 days and I was going berserk! The house doctor told me on the ninth day they may have to ship me to their sister hospital that was better equipped to handle my situation. I was devastated! I was so ready to go home. Fortunately, the next morning my cardiac doctor stopped by and told me I could go home that day! I was sooo happy! The fact I could sleep in my own bed, and take a decent shower made me so happy.

It's the little things, I guess.

Get well soon and kick that strange sounding affliction square in the...uh, behind!

It's unsurprising to me that a person of your incredibly rare qualities would get stuck with incredibly rare maladies. Still, it sucks.

I'm thinking of you today and sending you lots of love, Caryl. Wishing you swift recovery and a great night's sleep in your own bed soon.

Are they treating you with prednisone?

Yay! Corticosteroids! My fav's!

Just went through a controversial autoimmune therapy for a rarely-accurately-diagnosed disorder, myself. Except for the high-risk of kidney and liver damage and loss of bone-density and hearing loss and catching everyone's cold with the immunosuppression, steroids totally rule.

Best wishes for remission on the first round and a zero co-pay/deductible/patient-responsibility EoB!!

Hi Caryl,

I hope that you get some comfort from the fact that all of these folks (me included) care about you even though we've never met you in person. I'm wishing you the best possible outcome. Know that I care about you even though we may never meet.

Fond regards, Dave

They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan
