Newegg has several compact portable models starting ~ $25. I've been happy with most items I've bought from Newegg.

Our sponsors have an excellent one - Not the cheapest or smallest, but it doesn't die like most of the newer slim ones.

Burn, baby, burn!

I’d get one that can make rocks - for archival purposes, and/or one that can at least read BluRay so you have updated capabilities.

Yeah. I still have a Firewire CD burner. It's faster and more reliable than the USB external DVD burner. But when my Mac Pro dies, I'm afraid FW400 dies with it.

I literally have a box (and not a small one) full of old full-sized CD and DVD drives. IDE, SATA, and even (gasp) SCSI.

....as I recall [ but don't quote me on it ] the LG is a 'rebadged' Apple Superdrive, meaning the internals are basically the same......the nice thing is that is has an eject button (which the Superdrive doesn't have)......for those times when media gets stuck and the eject button on the computer doesn't work......

Our sponsor has some good cd drives that even play and burn blu-ray. Got mine from one of their garage sales. Sometimes OWC also has the burning software, or there is a stripped down toast in an app package or on sale.

You know about the M disc, right? This was posted here recently, maybe by you:

Does "M Disc" really work/ last that long? I remember I had some gold "archival" discs from about 2003; they went bad, but I had already gotten them backed up to hard drives.

At the bottom of the page in the "References" area there is a 2 page summary of the Dept of Defense Tests and findings.

The Gold discs did not fare very well.

I have an external Dell USB DVD-RW, I think it also does DVD+RW. They go for about $15 on ebay. Finder compatible. If you're interested i'll get you the model number. Doesn't get much cheaper than that.
