New iMac — In da House!
Posted by: steve...

Delivered this afternoon and posting from it now.

Mentioned by jdc in this thread: New 27" iMac, Retina Display (Late 2015), 3.30GHz i5, 2TB Fusion drive, 8 GB memory and with Sierra OS.

$1360 delivered from eBay Took about a week from New Jersey to here in CA. The seller still has them for sale.

I've been playing around with it today. The Retina display is beautiful and everything is working smoothly. Tomorrow I think I'll use Migration Assistant to transfer applications from my 2010 iMac.

I'm wondering about using a separate scratch disk for Photoshop. I'll have a spare 250GB SSD that I could use. I doubt if I can fill even half of the internal 2TB fusion drive.

How big of files are you creating that a separate scratch disk might help?

I mean you were using a 2010 iMac before ;)

Id prob jump on 16 GB of ram ASAP.

Most are in the 150-200MB range but occasionally one gets up as high as 450MB or so. I haven't been using a scratch disk lately and was just wondering if they were still a good idea.

Yeah, at that size Id say more ram over scratch disc. They are small enough to stay within the Fusion drives 128 GB flash section, which is 3000 MB/s -- a lot faster than a 500 MB/s SSD. I guess it still couldnt hurt?

That root error was only in High Sierra as far as I’m aware. Was not in Sierra on my machine.

Welcome to the JDC-Tips LEADER! club!

Mine took only two days to get here (MA) from NJ. Up and running now for a week, and (knock wood) and doing fine. I am impressed with the speed (compared to my ailing late-'09 iMac). Sierra seems fine, too. I was wondering about updating to High Sierra—should I? So far almost all my applications are working (CS3 wants me to install 'Legacy Java 6' first). 'Password error'?

Congrats- Same iMac here (eBay deal from April) on Sierra, but upgraded from an '08. The only issue I've seen is very occasional wee hours waking from sleep. I first switched to a wired KB and mouse, and just now turned off all the bluetooth options in prefs, which I hope finally cures it.

It's not so compelling at that price point.
