Fashion question: How does one wear a puffy winter vest?
Posted by: Onamuji

A vest like this (but not this brand):

Never had one before. Just received one as a gift. Not sure how I'm supposed to accessorize.

This guy seems to be wearing a white thermal undershirt under his. I don't usually wear my thermal underwear in such a way that it's visible to the casual viewer.

It's warm with a very lightweight down-alternative stuffing, but not especially insulative vs my sub-zero winter coat, and it lacks sleeves so...

Just a long sleeve shirt underneath? (Not great when temps are in the teens.)

Wear it with a thick cotton shirt and a tee under that?

Stack it over a fleece?

Does one wear something like this open/unzipped like a spring jacket? Seems that the high neck looks weird when it's not zipped.

Is it cool to leave it a little bit unzipped, or best to zip it all the way up to the chin? Looks a little weird to me both ways, but I'm not used to seeing myself in zippered turtleneck outerwear, so maybe I just need to get used to it.

TIA!

No undershirt, show your arms off!

"Just a long sleeve shirt underneath? (Not great when temps are in the teens.) "

but just right for temps in the 40s

You care about this stuff a lot more than I do. But I'd wear this kinda thing over a warm long sleeve shirt here in California winters. Perhaps put a light rain jacket over all of it in yucky weather.

Maybe you're trying to hard - if you don't like it, don't wear it, but I'd find uses for it. (hint, hint)

me personally, I don't care - I'm wearing this thing because it's keeping me warm - I'm not really considering anything else, but that's me.

Yeah, its for more mild weather -- keeps your core warm -- which can make the rest of you feel warmer.

Wife and kids have a bunch, perfect for Nor Cal weather where its 40 in the morning and 6o in the afternoon.

They always wear it zipped.

If you're ripped, then nothing underneath and unzipped. If not, then above advice is good.

Wear it over a warm sweater or hooded sweatshirt. It isn't for when temps drop below 20 degrees. If you are from the South then it is only used when temps are above 60.

With shame, and resignation. They were quite fashionable, in '78.

Also good to wear indoors when the landlord sets the thermostat too low.

Never been much of a vest guy. Give me a jacket or a coat.

Thanks! Always what I think of when a puffy/down vest is mentioned. Yes, I wore one in the mid '80s.

OK, they are not just 70s or 80s things. I own three or four down vests and wear them often. Great for hiking on a chilly morning. I tend to wear mine when the weather is in the forties or so. I put it over a long sleeve T and a light shirt, usually flannel. I also find them comfortable while driving since I don't like wearing coats in the car. I rarely snap/button them up.

When I run in the winter, I wear a thin one like the OPs picture as an outer layer over a quarter zip. Probably work with a quarter zip for casual wear also.

HUH?????

Its' job is to keep you warm.

If you're cold, put it on; if you're too warm, take it off.

Yep, same here. I had several. The pic has it right. You need to dress in layers. Peel off a layer if it's getting too warm and throw it in the car.

If it's white, don't wear it after Labor Day.
