punching bag

My wife recently started taking a punching bag class at her athletic club. I think it might have been called thai bow ? Unfortunately she is no long able to attend. I thought for christmas I might buy a bag to suspend from the garage ceiling. It would need to be hoisted up with a car was in the bag but otherwise should work. I know nothing about punching bags. Any advice?

If you have a Dick's or Big5, sporting good store near you, you can see what they have. If she is going to be kicking and punching it, you want a quality heavy bag, check online reviews, also get gloves and pads/guards. Nothing like stretching your skin on a punching bag. You can hang it from your ceiling or a stand. If hanging from ceiling. Put the load across multiple beams. Close to a wall. You might be able to find a kit for the wall/ceiling that reinforces it.

Edit: hang then fill.

Tae Bo. You will need a heavy duty pulley system to pull up the bag.

Or you could just hang from the rafters and say get to it.

We bought an 80 lb heavy bag. I can lift that up and hang it on a hook. That seems like a substantial weight to hit unless she is really strong. I have a 200 year old wooden beam in my barn, so I didn't have to worry about what to mount it on, but it does seem like it can't just be your ceiling.

Just a guess, but the one most associated with a heavy bag would be Muay Thai or “Thai boxing”.

Muay Thai = Thai kick boxing, Thai competitive boxing/martial art, fairly recently brought into the fitness workout family.

Versus

Tae bo = An infomercial level aerobic workout regimen from the 90s, started by Billy Blanks, a taekwondo instructor. The name is a fractured take on taekwon boxing.

The craigslist idea was excellent as prices were about 50% lower than store prices. In the end I looked up her old gymn website and was able to buy the same bag she was using there. They call it a cardio bag. No idea what that means. I’ll look for some sort of training video later tonight.

Punching and kicking is a pretty good toning workout.

I have a bag I'd sell to you but it's probably too heavy for your wife.
