Stand Mixer: KitchenAid or CuisineArt?

These seem to be the two major brands, and I see so many models. I have no idea where to start.

I want something solid, that will last a long time. And I do not want a basic model that I need to upgrade later.

I'd say KA as well. Very popular with the mixer-owners group at Yahoo.
We have a CA hand mixer that is the 2nd one in 3 years.
Though I do like the food proc of CA we have.

I have a KitchenAid "Professional 600", which has a 575 watt motor that I bought at a deep discount at Fry's many years ago as a refurb. It's big and heavy, which is good.

The other thing you need to consider is whether you get a head tilt, or a bowl lift model. Mine is of the bowl lift design. These tend to have the more powerful motors, which you'll want if you use your mixer to knead bread with the dough hook attachment.

Edit: Or you could just go large and buy a used Hobart...grinning smiley

Cuisinart mixer and food processor for me. Use both a lot. I even grind chicken (extra attachment) with my mixer. Love them both.

Kitchen Aid. The one my parents gave us 35 years ago is now living with my daughter after we bought a bigger, "professional" version. For the 2 of us...

Is this a good choice?

I want to make bread dough. I was about to upgrade from a Panasonic bream machine to a Zojirushi, but for almost the same price I can get a mixer instead and bake the bread in the oven. What do you all say?

Anyway, this is not an immediate buy, probably something I may buy in the next few months. I can wait for a better price or until I decide if I really want to give up the bread machine for a mixer.

Yes, that's a good one. I have used KA stand mixers for decades. My mom still has her tilt head from 1959, a wedding present. I have the bigger bowl-lift model, which has enough grunt and a big enough bowl o mix a quad batch of Toll House Choc chip cookies.

The power take off for accessories uses the same accessories going back decades. I have the meat grinder attachment (the old all metal one) and want to get the pasta roller. Growing up we had the wooden bodied ice cream maker. The KA mixer did all the cranking.

since you're going for bread, short of an Ankarsrum, the KA is a nice beast.

The mixer is a multitasker, and you can bake more than just rectangular loaves of bread in the oven.

Be sure to measure the distance between the counter and your cabinets if you go with the "pro" KA - they are quite tall and you want to be sure it will fit.

Years ago someone that repaired the ka mixers told me that they all have the same internals and to not buy on the wattage of the motor but based on the size of the bowl.

The wattage of the motor seems proportional with the size of the bowl. Also it is pretty easy to use a kill-a-watt to measure the actual wattage, if necessary.

I have a Kenwood, the Rolls Royce of stand mixers, that I bought at Wm Sonoma years ago. It's like new and I have both the stainless and melamine bowls which are larger than the Kitchenaid, plus I have the original box. I bought the Kenwood fitted cover and it has been covered and unused for quite some time.

It's really a beautiful design.

I'm on my way home from the hospital after starting dialysis. PM me if you are interested.

Making small batches in a big bowl is can be a PITA

Unless you are going to make huge batches of pizza dough and maybe bread that needs torque to knead I'd go with the smaller kitchenaide tilt head classic plus
