Rodents in the car - remedies?
Posted by: Ombligo
Date: January 08, 2018 07:50AM
we have some type of small rodent taking up residence under the hood of my wife's car. We need it to move out before any wiring or rubber gets chewed. One suggestion was to use Fox Urine pellets from Shakeaway.

Anyone used that with success, or any other reasonable suggestions?

Maybe a small baited trap on the ground by the wheel while it's parked? Then drive it miles away and let it go. Or, if you're not feeling the love for a rodent, put some rodent poison bait under the hood when it's parked.

You will have to either trap it or chase it away with an unpleasant odor. Be persistent with the odor source by re-applying daily.

I solved this problem with several days of old fashioned snap traps with peanut butter placed on the air cleaner.

Also dryer sheets repel the rascals. That's some nasty mess, dryer sheets.

find a parking lot and go there.

Spend a half a day blowing donuts in the parking lot.

When you stop, those rodents will come stumbling out of there with their little eyeballs spinning..and they will be saying "wtf?"

If you can, try leaving the hood up, that will remove the sense of shelter there. I've also read that having some lighting shining into the engine compartment at night (with the hood open, or from below) can also convince them that it's not a good place for a home.

And maybe leave a few snap traps in the engine compartment too. My luck with that was that I'd find them snapped and the peanut butter gone, so I was just feeding them, but I did eventually catch one.

Fabric softener of all kinds, unless makers have corrected it, cause more allergies than anything else. Keeps the rats away for sure. They're smart enough to know.

Traps. I had a mouse living in my Honda Civic for the winter. Trapped him and moved him to the woods half a mile away. He must have told his cousin because that booger moved into my Honda CR-V. He got the shop vacuum.

In my case, I could tell the places it was hanging out. I used dryer sheets to move it towards one place, and put a trap there.

Set a leaf blower on the hood. The racket will drive it out.

I always use dryer/softener sheets in the engine compartment when I'm storing my car outside during winter.

We have used a couple of moth balls in a perforated bag. just keep it away from the heater air intake. It will royally stink up the cabin.
What brand of car is it?
Our Audi seems to be the prime candidate for mice. they use a soy based wire insulation that animals love to eat. Honda same problem.
Honda actually makes a "rat proof" electrical tape. It has little drawings of mice on it.
Expensive about $45 per roll

Many of the new cars use soy based wire coatings. To rodents...it smells like food.
