How would you go about finding the owner of a lost iPhone?
Posted by: ka jowct

The Other Human found one in a cab several weeks ago. It's in a Mophie case and appears to be a 6 or 6S. I just discovered it recently when cleaning. He says he gave it a look to see if he could identify the owner, but of course could not get past the lock screen, and then he just forgot about it. Is there a way to get the serial number? Would that even help? Would Apple be any help in this situation? I was thinking of going to an Apple Store with it.

Take it to the carrier? Ask Siri who owns this phone.

Keep it charged and maybe they can use Find My iPhone.

Keep it charged.
The owner or someone should be trying to call it.

Does it even have a sim in it ?
Maybe the owner was one of those gullible types that believes everything they see on CNN and tossed the phone because "APPLE BAD". Took the sim out and put it one of those "good" phones. LOL

No SIri response holding the home button ?

That's interesting. I would have thought that information would be protected. I tried it on my phone but pushing the home button with my finger unlocks the phone. I tried again using a pen to push the button and it did indeed identify me, and provided most of my contact information.
Edit: it also appears that asking Siri who the owner of the phone is without using fingerprint ID deactivates the fingerprint scanner, which requires the owner to enter the passcode to unlock the phone. So you can't just knock out the owner and unlock it with his/her finger.

It's not connected to the internet, and shows "no service". I think it has long since been replaced. Also, the date on the lock screen is June 24, so I am guessing that it has been sitting here for longer than a few weeks. Other Human was vague on the timing.

There's no way anyone just tossed it, complete with battery pack. It was found in a cab, which is a place where things frequently get lost, by falling out of pockets or just being left on a seat.

Years ago, I lost my wallet in a cab, due to pockets that were not secure enough. In one case, I realized it was missing right away, began yelling at the driver to wait, and he responded by flooring it and speeding away.

As suggested, turn it in to the carrier if that can be identified.

Otherwise give it to the police. They have access to means of identifying the registered owner, will depend on how well they follow up on it.

This is why I have an In Case of Emergency (ICE) app on my phone that displays a faceshot and emergency contact numbers on my lock screen.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Or just add your ICE info onto your iPhone wallpaper. It'll appear on the lock screen.

I would have given the phone to the cab driver when it was found

Only a good idea if you totally trust a cab driver to turn it in to his boss, and believe that his boss will also do the right thing.

I had plenty of ID in the wallet I lost in a cab, never got any of it back.

There is no way that I can see to determine who the carrier is. Do you think NYPD would make a good-faith effort to find the owner? Seems to me that an Apple Store could also do that, but I'm not sure that they would.

It's plugged in now, maybe the owner will be able to trace it if FInd My Phone was set up.

Given the info the "other human" gave you and the time period that has elapsed, I would think the owner has long since given up finding this iPhone. I personally would have given up.

I would take it to an Apple store (or call first), and then to a Police station and turn it in. It is doing no one any good in its current status.

Months later i doubt the owner is looking anymore. Its long been replaced. No idea if it will still show up on Find my Iphone if a new phone has been activated, and if they even use FMiP that often...

If it were my phone, and you plugged it in and I found it, Id prob be pretty pissed that you sat on it for months without doing anything...

You could check if they have the Medical ID set up, go to the passcode screen, select Emergency in the lower left, then Medical ID in the lower left. If so, that will give you a name, and potentially emergency contacts (i.e. spouse/family).

Tried that, no luck. Yes, something should have been done with it long ago. But I'm not the one who found it in the cab.

Create a network call ATT and see if it connects. If it does, then it is an AT&T phone. Then you can use Siri to check who the owner is. I'm guessing that they did a remote wipe on it and it is a brick.

If you pop open the SIM tray, the carrier's logo is likely on the SIM. Or maybe they're corporate "colors".

Yes, I was able to do that, after prying off the Mophie Juice Pack, which was a bit of an adventure. BTW OWC sells a nice pry tool. Came in handy today. Will take the phone to an AT&T store tomorrow.
