That was my recommendation. Mrs. Pops tried the "I Pillow" and ended up sending it back.

I am currently using this one:

It has just the right amount of cooling, but not so much that I get chills laying down on it. It conforms quite nicely to my head and neck, though in the cold winter months, it has gotten stiffer with the colder room temps. It gets more supple during the day with warmer room temps. Overall, very happy with it. YMMV

MrBig,

Pillows are a _very_ personal purchase. Tried several regular pillows and memory foam pillows. My current favorite is a MyPillow my wife bought me for my birthday. Been using it since May. I'm happy with it.

I got Ikea's higher end pillows and their pillow covers. Select your pillow shape. I've been very happy.

I just get three $5.99 department store pillows and replace every 6 months to a year. Sleep fine and no neck or back aches. Got a memory foam for Christmas once and it was horrid. One of the few gifts I've ever returned.

Sam's had several that seemed good and weren't very expensive. I imagine Costco is similar.

I was where you are not too long ago. We got a new bed and mattress, so wanted to get some decent pillows but nothing crazy $$$. The choices are staggering and confusing, but someone pointed us to the Indulgence brand at Bed, Bath and Beyond, and this seemed to be a nice balance. Soft and adapts to different sleeping styles when fluffed and shaped. I think they are ~$40 for a queen, $60 for king. Yes, more than lunch at Chipotle, but not bad for something you sleep on every night. We spent ~$15 each on some extras for the shams and to replace some seldom used guest pillows that had seen better days.

This looks like roughly the same thing at Amazon (price is higher).

My daughter and I are mostly stomach sleepers and it's hard as heck to find a pillow that doesn't cause neck or shoulder aches. She bought the pancake pillow and uses two of inserts. She gave me the rest and I only use one insert. So we have made 3 pillows and have 2 extra. Still not idea for stomach sleeping, but workable. No more pain.

Has anyone tried the Purple Pillows? Same concept as the Purple Mattress.

I'd like to try one or both, but I'm not willing to commit.

6 years ago i went on a pillow search as i was constantly waking up with neck pain. this pillow was a godsend:

Mediflow Original Waterbase Pillow

i have other pillows on my bed for decorative purposes but this is the one i sleep on. my neck feels the difference when i travel and sleep on something else. worth every penny.

Yeah, the wife brings her own pillow (a down/feather hybrid) along with her when she travels.

Personally, I can sleep fine on a wadded-up towel, if need be.

The pillow type you need depends on your sleeping position. Here's a good discussion of this: [www.consumerreports.org]

For myself, I use only down pillows for sleeping, but have a firm polyester pillow that I use to prop up my back against the headboard when I want to read in bed.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

I love my neck roll pillow filled with buckwheat hulls. I sleep on my side.
