need help to fix grandma's computer

Grandma's computer is sending out LOTS of email to addresses at dgnet.dogangazetecilik.com.tr which all fail and are returned to her. It's all pretty gross stuff. Her computer is running an old version of OS X so the normal adware tools don't work on it. Any pointers on what to do?

Whew, sounds like a real mess dave. You know that. All I know is I'd do all the updates it can take. Paging Robert.

Are you sure they are coming from her computer?

If it's turned off for a day, do they continue to be sent?

Boot into her bootable backup clone and clone it back to the internal drive. Or just erase her internal drive, re-install the OS and then bring over her Mail Documents, Pictures and Music from the backup.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I'll be headed to her house after lunch so keep the suggestions coming. Here are pics that I was given of her computer screen. I don't think there's any personal information in them but there is offensive content fyi. Oh, I forgot to mention I cannot upgrade her computer as she has memory issues and would not be able to handle something changing.

^^^^^ THIS

If grandma has no reason to be receiving email messages from Turkey, they can be filtered/deleted automatically before they get to appear in her Inbox.

Assuming that there is a router between the computer and the internet, you could try to set a router rule to block that address. Maybe even stronger parental controls...

Once you get there, download and run EtreCheck.

[etrecheck.com]

Also, if granny doesn't have it already, install Malwarebytes.

You'll probably have to run both programs multiple times to clean all the crap out. Educate granny re: downloading from non-Apple approved sites (check her System Prefernces>Security & Privacy>Allow apps downloaded from>App Store.

Her email was spoofed. She needs to change her password at minimum.

If shes not a heavy email user, she should switch to gmail and let all her friends know. Can still keep using apple mail with gmail...

I thought the new Malwarebytes was the new MacKeeper.

jdc, I am pretty sure it was her gmail account.

While I'm not good at knowing which tools work with which OS, it REALLY helps to know what OS she is using for those that do.

First thing is to change her mail password then computer login password. Is her account on the Mac the default administrator?

If they were really being sent from the gmail account they should be in the sent mail / out box for the account since they're IMAP.

I think it's more likely that a spammer just used her email address as the return address and all of the bounces are coming back to her. I've seen this as a pretty common occurrence over the years, usually only lasts a day or two and they move on to the next email on their list.

How long has this been happening? Do you see any evidence that emails were actually sent from her account.

So I show up at grandma's house and there are NO weird emails at all. I do searches etc and find nothing. I think gmail had a problem and fixed it on their own.
