Witch hazel, honestly. The other things made it worse. I was told to avoid anything with -caine in it, but that may just be my doc.

Also, to make you feel better, my doc also said hemorrhoids are the price we pay for walking upright.

A diet of things like soups and stews are also helpful while things heal...

.....thought that taking fiber/laxatives helps.....so you don't have to 'push' and it comes out more easily........it should at least help aggravating the condition but talk to doctor.....not a hem expert.....

Ick, you have my sympathy. Fortunately, I only have trouble with those things once in a blue moon. A dab of my go to fix is Preperation H ointment. It seems to work well for me and I think I'm using the same tube from 10+ years ago. The ointment stuff doesn't seem to go bad with age.

Given how and where it's applied, that's saying something.

Can't believe this thread escaped the obligatory PITA comment. Anyway, try some nice long soaking in a warm/hot bath. And as a preventive measure (as was mentioned previously), don't linger on the throne. Skip the reading material, get in and get out.

As you know, hemorrhoids are dilated veins in a bunch, right beneath your anal "skin". Sometimes the blood inside them clots (a "thrombosed hemorrhoid") and then they can really hurt due to the inflammation/body's reaction to the thrombosis.

Not sure how to speed resolution along - other than surgery. Yuck.

Keep in mind that there are several kinds of preparation H creams/ointments/gels, with different ingredients. Unfortunately, none have pseudoephedrine any more. Ingredients include cortisone (for inflammation/itching), lidocaine ( for pain), phenylephrine (for vasoconstriction), lubricants. Plus there are witch hazel wipes. Try one or more in combination.

"Anyway, try some nice long soaking in a warm/hot bath"

This worked the best for me when I overdid exercising at the gym.

What's worked for me has been wheat germ oil. Takes maybe 2-3 days.

My doctor prescribed Proctofoam for mine. It helps with the pain and the inflammation seems to subside. A laxative- Clearlax or Miralax helps make "dropping a deuce" a little less painful for me.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've never had such a pain in the a$$ in my life. I might call my doc tomorrow and inquire about the Protofoam.

Not lingering on the throne is a good suggestion. Also the suggestion from Newt about the fiber. After having my sigmoid colon removed last year, I take a teaspoon of fiber in my OJ every morning. It has helped a lot.

FWIW, I've heard that taking decongestants (the one's with pseudoephedrine) will help with the swelling.

Your doc can prescribe a generic cortisone cream of industrial strength that only costs a few dollars but that does wonders compared to Prep H. Maybe it’s called pramoxine? In the meantime I’d suggest OTC cortisone cream.

The first time I had this problem I decided to take the law into my own hands, and used a depilatory first in an effort to get the OTC treatments closer to God, so to speak. That was an exquisitely bad idea for a host of reasons, not the least of which being my complete unfamiliarity with depilatories, never mind their use in sensitive areas. NOT RECOMMENDED.

....it is a good idea, particularly, as one gets older to take daily fiber/laxative......especially if one doesn't get enough roughage.....the ones like Metamucil which use psyllium can cause 'gas' but the other type has no taste/clear is easier to mix with all beverages and less side effects.....

..........it makes going to bathroom so much easier......as 'it' just slides out.....with minimum effort..........

I was given a prescription stool softener while I was taking chemo drugs; apparently a side effect of Temodar is really bad constipation.

Certainly not. My MRF name is not seconddegreerectalchemicalburnplushemorrhoiders. "Tender" doesn't begin to describe that, singularly or in plural.
