Microsoft Halts 'Spectre' and 'Meltdown' Patches After AMD-Powered Devices Lock
Microsoft said AMD-powered devices locked into an 'unbootable' state after installing a security patch designed to thwart Spectre and Meltdown attacks.

The Street -
Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) said Tuesday that some of its customers with devices that use chips designed by Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) could not restart them after installing a recent security update and that it would temporarily halt the "patches" designed to correct recently revealed security flaws.

In a statement posted on the company's support website, Microsoft said that "some AMD chipsets do not conform to the documentation previously provided to Microsoft to develop the Windows operating system mitigations to protect against the chipset vulnerabilities known as Spectre and Meltdown."

The cure seems worse than the disease.

The irony is that the fix will likely involve creating a Linux boot disc/usb to allow them to flash the chipset again...if they even can. This may be referred to as 'The Great Bricking of 2018'.

Because you can't patch a hardware defect without a recall. [or software workaround]. A recall would require having replacement parts. Intel will be selling "defective" shops for several years before the problem is fixed.

I know, but Intel could write the patch, not Microsoft. Why should Microsoft spend money to fix this issue?

The workaround for some of these issues requires a redesign of the OS Kernel, that's Microsoft's product, not Intel's.

What I read had MS blaming AMD, and AMD saying they provided everything MS needed. Supposed to only affect some older systems.

So those don't matter, of course, says the guy typing on a 2010 MacBook Pro.

If it happened to me I'd be yelling bloody murder.

All the user agreement language about not warrantying usability or fitness of purpose probably won't mean much when lawyers hit them with lawsuits for killing a working system.

Good luck.
