Victory against overly tight pickle jar !

Mrs. Cbelt3 wanted pickles with dinner. Okay.... I have a fresh jar in the pantry. Um... grunt.... can’t open it! Hands too weak from flu and arthritis. Hot water... nope. Bang around the top of the lid to break the seal? Nope.

Two 10” Craftsman strap wrenches ? THAT got it open !!!

You know, you can get little rubber grip-thingies for that job. They work wonders.

They hand them out for free as promo items at fairs and stuff. I've got a bunch. Haven't had a problem opening a jar since I was a kid.

It does sound like you were in a bit of a pickle.

I like to slap the base of jars like your pickle jar into the palm of one hand to break the vacuum. Doesn't always work, but works more often than not.

Have also got my grandmother's Easy Twist by Foley jar clamp, which has a fixed extension on one side, and an adjustable extension on the other (ridges along the arm allow for adjusting) and a clamp handle to hold it onto a jar top"

And an Edlund Top Off, probably from my other grandmother:

Ah, for when gadgets were gadgets!

Good luck.

Edlund Top Off! I have one for years and it really works well, even now that I have lost a lot of strength.
I looked on Amazon and the vintage version that I have is shown, but out of stock.
The alternative model seems to be a decent knockoff, but it has a plastic handle rather than the wood handle like mine. It looks as if it would work the same way as the original. You can also find the original on ebay.

We have ( or had, stuff gets thrown out around here because " no one uses it" ) a jar top grabber that looked a bit like an oil filter remover. I'll have to try to locate it and check make sure it actually works. You know, for when I get old and feeble and can't open jars. smiley-laughing001emoticon-animal-022smiley-excited001emoticon-animal-004smiley-shocked003ROTFLstick poke smiley

Cbelt,

I tried lots of gadgets including the top off mentioned by Winston. If running the lid under hot water doesn't do it, I break out a 6" diameter rubberized shelf liner. Works every time. It's something like this:

'course, a small square or circle piece of a rug pad that is similar to the shelf liner will do the job, too.

I think what I'm using right now was taken from a piece of rug liner. It's been so long, I can't remember anymore.
