No more 24/7, 70 hour work weeks for me! I'm retiring! :-)
Posted by: JoeM

Woohoo! I'm retiring at the end of the month, after 15 years at my present job as design manager and webmaster. Looking forward to getting back to reading the forum here more often and creating music and my own art again.

One of my last projects was a graphic for the Reuters building's digital screen in Times Square, NYC, last Monday. I worked for Reuters Financial Television for 4 years as their senior audio engineer and worked in this building for Reuters TV on and off, up to and including covering the attack on 9/11. It was nice to be back again!

My experience is different, but there are probably a lot of factors that affect how it goes.

Congrats on your successful working life and retirement. Having time for your own work is a wonderful thing. Trying to get there myself, but retirement is proceeding glacially.

Congratulations and I hope you have a long and enjoyable retirement.
I'll pass on some much-needed advice that was given to me by a long-retired friend when I pulled the pin five years ago:
Give yourself at least two years, and maybe more, to figure out what you want to do with the rest of your life. Try a little of this and a little of that and maybe some of those.
Just don't sit in the "chair of death" watching "The View" or you won't make it till the next season.

Nowadays, 15 years at the same job is pretty unusual.

Congratulations JoeM.

Don't be surprised if you find yourself dreaming about your old job (good and bad). Getting your internal time clock reset can be difficult, old habits are hard to break. Just enjoy yourself, do anything that keeps you happy. Ah, and learn to say No!!

Congratulations on your retirement! smileys with beer

I'm out for almost seven years now and don't miss work at all (32+ years as a "County Mountie"). old fogey smiley

A small RV offers an amazing amount of travel freedom. I got a 17' Casita Spirit Deluxe Travel Trailer the year before I retired (to facilitate a trip to the Burning Man Festival). In four years, I logged over 50,000 miles, crisscrossing the country several times in that Casita. In 2014, I "graduated" to a Super-C Class diesel puller motorhome (a 2015, Dynamax DX3-37RB) that, once I get my house sold, I can easily live in full time. There's SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much to see, do and explore across America and, an RV is an excellent way to do it!

Good for you.

Just be sure to have something to stay active at that doesn't cost a mint. I ended up going back to work not because I needed the money (though the insurance is nice since I'm too young for Medicare), but to have something to do.

Wow, JoeM2.0, Great!! Good job all those years. Health. That's the ticket. Mine has gone down lately...so do take care of that. I'm getting kicked out March 31st, so officially, April Fool Day is my first full day of retirement!

I know you will have a great retirement! Seems like you have some good hobbies to do.

Congrats! I was going to say spend more time on the forum, but you covered that sentiment right away. I've got 7-8 years, want the solar loan gone before I retire.
Hopefully your health and finances will allow you travel at will and a lot. That is what we want when the time comes.
Knock yourself out JoeM! Well not literally.

Thanks so much everyone! So much good advice here, I'm going to read over everyone's posts a couple of times to absorb it. I can't tell you all how many times I've wanted to read over the posts here but have been so busy and overloaded that I just couldn't. I was so busy at one point, that I actually worked from January through March with one day off. Not going to miss that!hamster dance

No, no OT, I'm a... "manager". But I did get 5 weeks vacation (usually wound up working for two of them at Christmas time). It's all good. I was fortunate to work with good friends and the company was very loyal to me over all the years so I willingly accepted the crunch and was grateful for what I had.

I can only imagine retirement.
I work a lot of overtime.
Perhaps a 40 hour week is retirement.

My wife's just started another career, in small group travel. At least she will get to go on some trips.

I don't think I'll ever really "retire". But then I tell my kids I haven't figured out what I am going to do when I grow up.

Just a thought, after you decompress a bit: lots of non-profit organizations could use your help. There might be one which fits your passions.

Good luck.
