Inaugurating MRUGLA, planning MRUGLA Dinner or Lucheon
Posted by: Marcos Malo
Date: January 16, 2006 09:05AM
That's right, MRUGLA. (Prounounced either Emurugla or Mister Ugla)

Mac Resource Users Group Los Angeles.

I propose we have a dinner or a luncheon on Saturday, the 28th of January. I propose we have it in either Glendale or Pasadena. Does anyone second?

Post suggestions for where and when to meet here.

I'm thinking 1:00 PM at Jake's or Noodle World in Pasadena, since either is very close to the Pasadena Apple Store. Alternate: Glendale Chevy's. They have patio dining and are close to the Glendale Galleria, which contains an Apple Store.

Brian, can you make this sticky?

MR. FUGLA

IMHO, it sounds so much more classy.

Sorry I can't join since I'm on the "right" coast.

Sounds like fun, but I think I have a prior commitment for that date. Unfortunately, I rely on the memory system for my social calendar instead of writing stuff down -- I'll just have to wait and see what comes up.

P.S. I vote for Jake's.

Please don't suggest the back room at Burger Continental on Lake in Pasadena.

Hey, BC's back room is pretty cool on weekends, when they have the music and belly dancer. I liked it better when it was the back patio, though.

Not my first choice, but since it's only a couple of blocks from my place, I wouldn't complain if that is where we were to meet.

I vote Glendale, it's closer by 5 minutes, I'm in La Crescenta.

BC is too effin noisy once the music and belly dancers start.

Pie & Burger is good, but pricey.

I'm not a fan of Chevy's either, but hey, I'll go where the majority decide.

That's OK. We're looking for a membership that is comfortable with their own sexuality, so that homophobia or heterophobia are not issues. They really shouldn't be issues in a group based around an interest in Macintosh computers, don't you think?

You're welcome to apply again when you're a mature adult.

MR MOOF of LA

Mac Resource Mostly Offline Outside Forum of Los Angeles

In this way we can all have our own local chapter, e.g.,
MR MOOF of Northern Virginia
MR MOOF of New York City
MR MOOF of Boston
and so on.

I realize that Clarus is female and Mr. is not quite right, but sometimes we have to take artistic liberties.

It is for me.

(I can't speak to the rest of Abe's menu but the corned beef is pretty good; not only but you can always get a seat - not so @ Brent's. Avoid Weilers like the plague.)

Pasadena/Glendale are centrally located for those living in the Angeles National Forest.

Ah, see -- implicit in the use of the term "centrally" is the concept that it is used with respect to all parties involved. winking smiley

Parking at Brent's sucks. Seating ain't much better. I've never even heard of Weilers. Of course, it's been four years now since I've moved away from the Valley.

Hey, what about us San Diegans? Remember, I was at the infamous DM (I didn't say it)LAX brunch. I vote for somewhere in the OC. It's halfway between. Of course we'd have to change the name to MRUGSC (So. Cal). Nice to see you back Marcos!

I've never been to Langers. Sounds like a good possibility. If we want to go downtown, we could also try the Pantry. Dick Riordan will thank us.

Anyway, these are all good suggestions, and we can try them all at subsequent meetings. We need to select a place, and so far we have a nomination and a second for Jake's in old town Pasadena.

If this goes well and we have regular or semi-regular gatherings, perhaps we can do something in OC in the summer. Maybe a barbecue at Salt Creek Beach (Aliso Beach is the new name, I think). Right around the corner from GeneL.

Downtown LA.

Phillipe's has easy free parking. Great food. Good back room (for the circus & railroad

people).

Langer's has no parking and you need to be packing to walk near 7th and Alvarado.

Saw an attempted murder at the bus stop out the window years ago.

Brent's sandwiches are $13.00 and up.

How 'bout Marmalade in Malibu?

Phillipe's doesn't hold a candle to Langer's -- frankly, it's really not that good.

There is validated parking for Langer's one block east, on 7th & Westlake. The neighborhood ain't that bad during the day; my work brings me through that area on a regular basis, and I've never had a problem. Night may be a different story, which is the primary reason Langer's closes at 4 PM daily (closed on Sunday).

Phillipe's is a great place but it's a madhouse at lunchtime. Now a little futher north there's a centrally located place called Jerry's Famous Deli. . .

I vote for Lawry's Tam O'Shanter Inn. Great place, great food and easy to get to.

"Delighting diners for over eight decades, the Tam O'Shanter Inn is Los Angeles' oldest restaurant operated by the same family in the same location.
It has been said that our customers are willing to dance a jig for the fine food and old world atmosphere of this cozy Tudor inn. If you've got some Scottish ancestry, you might even find your family tartan among the extensive collection which decorates the walls of our several dining rooms."

I'd drive up from Dana Point.

Had great sandwiches/lunches there at the bar, the bartender cuts them fresh while you wait.

Just when I was ready to assume dictatorial power and call Jake's the winner.

The Tam is a great idea. I've never had their sandwiches, but the prime rib is really good. Really, really good. Plus, it will lure GeneL up from Dana Point.

All in favor of the Tam at 1:00 PM on Saturday, January 28th, say Aye.

Aye!

Aye!

If we can agree on this and I get an approximate number of attendees, I will call them and see if I can get a room for us.

I have found that some restaurants are anxious to bring in groups like ours and provide space and sometimes perks in order to get the "beverage" benefits.

Btw, as I remember, the menu has some reasonably priced items (for an upscale place) and the food was always exceptional.

I just checked with the Tam and they have a round table that seats 12, that we can reserve for lunch any weekday. They don't serve lunch on weekends.

This would work fine if we can do a weekday and there aren't more than about a dozen of us.

I don't know if dinner was being considered since this would run into a greater expense, but we could reserve the same table as well.

If there would be more than a dozen of us this place wouldn't work because we'd have to get a private room with a special menu at a higher cost.

Wherever we decide to go, the number of us wanting to attend should probably be arrived at first

I feel we would need to check beforehand with any restaurant that we choose, since many restaurants couldn't handle the logistics if the group is too large.

Obviously, Fritz, you live somewhere that is out of touch with culture and has no decent restaurants, so you have no way to judge the quality of a "good" restaurant.

To that, add the fact that you are misinformed.

Of course, if burgers are your mainstay and the criteria for your Epicurean yardstick there's no means to improve your education.

How sad.

- Tam's works for me, but lunch on a weekday is DEFINITELY out.
- A group of a dozen is not that large.
- A few bucks for dinner menu items is not that big a deal.

We will need more responses to the dinner idea and then have a vote.

As for me, dinner at the Tam sounds great.

If we get a consensus we then have to decide on a date. Suggestions?

Btw, please remember that the Tam doesn't do lunch on the weekend

Effin Haole, the Tam isn't far for you if you're in the Burbank area. It's just a short distance down the I5 to Los Feliz and then about a mile east on Los Feliz.

So far dinner at the Tam has the most votes but I'm hoping for more members to be able to join the get together.

It's been a long time since I lived in Sherman Oaks so I can't think of a nice place that would accommodate us for lunch during the week, if that would be preferable for more members.

Anyone who'd like to join the "party," please let us hear from you.

The Tam is only 10 mins from my house.

Perfect for me if weekends or late afternoons.

If we do anything during the week, then it would have to be late afternoon or on the Westside - Olympic/405 area for it to be lunch.
