VLC 3.0.0
Does all sorts of new stuff. [www.videolan.org]

VideoLAN: VLC 3.0's huge update brings Chromecast support, 360-degree video. VLC 3.0.0 also introduces early support for the emerging royalty-free video-compression standard AV1.

VideoLAN and the developers of the open-source VLC media player have unveiled its first major release in three years, dubbed Vetinari.

VLC 3.0.0 is available today for Linux, Windows, iOS, macOS, and Android, and brings support for streaming to Chromecast devices, 360-degree video and 3D audio, and hardware acceleration for 4K and 8K playback.

The update also enables browsing local network drives to access content, and improved support for Blu-ray movies.

Android updates include Chromecast support from a phone, hardware decoding ,support for Android Auto voice actions, playlist files detection, and picture-in-picture support.

The developers note that the 3.0.x branch of VLC will be the last version to support Windows XP, which is now supported on a "best-effort basis" and so works but with limitations.

"You really should upgrade to a more modern Windows version," VLC's developers told its users, and urged them also to use the 64-bit version of VLC for Windows. VLC 3.0.0 also requires a Linux kernel higher than 2.6.26 and has dropped support for Mac OS X 10.6.

The release notes also mention "experimental AV1 video" decoder support. VideoLAN last year joined the Alliance for Open Media's effort to develop the AOMedia Video codec, AV1, a successor to VP9 and a royalty-free alternative HEVC.

This initiative was hatched by Google and is backed by Apple, Amazon, Cisco, Facebook, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Mozilla, Netflix and Nvidia.

Apple only recently joined AOMedia as a member and in doing so added significant weight to the initiative.

The iPhone-maker had previously backed HEVC or H.265, but as CNET notes, using the software in products can be difficult and requires negotiating royalties with three different HEVC patent licensing groups.

BTW- You may recognize the name Vetinari from Discworld books.

Havelock Vetinari
Race Human (as far as anyone can tell)
Age about 50
Occupation Patrician, ex-Assassin
Physical appearance Tall, fragile, in control. Has a goatee. His eyes are a penetrating ice-blue in colour. Walks with a cane after the events of Men at Arms
Residence Patrician's Palace, Ankh-Morpork
Family Motto: SI NON CONFECTVS, NON REFICIAT. (If it ain't broke, don't fix it)

Havelock Vetinari is the current Patrician of Ankh-Morpork. He has been the supreme ruler for some years and is the successor of Mad Lord Snapcase. The Assassins' Guild have an AM$ 1,000,000 fee for his inhumation, though rumour says that they are not accepting contracts on him at present. As a former Assassin himself, he is probably just too difficult to kill. However, his greatest defence against would-be plotters is that he carefully sees to it that a reality with him as Patrician is slightly better than one without him.

It was his discovery that people only really want stability and that tomorrow should pretty much resemble today, and this has been his greatest contribution to Ankh-Morpork. Impressively, he manages to keep this up even while he drags Ankh-Morpork, sometimes kicking and screaming, into the future. It is said that Vetinari can accomplish more with irony than most others can with steel. He can also accomplish more with one raised eyebrow than most people can with two of them and a lifetime of practice.

He seems to have no vices whatsoever, since some guild or other would otherwise undoubtedly have made use of them by now. Admittedly, Vetinari did ban street theatre and tends to hang mime artists upside down in a scorpion pit opposite a sign reading "Learn The Words," but this is generally taken by the population as simply an amusing character trait. Anyway, in Ankh-Morpork people think that strolling players are no better than criminals, and mimes are just plain freaky.

It has also recently emerged that Vetinari also has firmly-held Views about modern art which are not far removed from those he holds concerning mime artists. While a fan of music in general, Lord Vetinari believes that actual live performance of Opera proves less enjoyable than simply reading the notes on the page.

Lord Vetinari enjoys a variety of games and puzzles (both metaphoric and literal); he faithfully completes the daily crossword in the Ankh-Morpork Times and is a master at Stealth Chess. He is also an expert Thud player, adept at either the Trolls or Dwarfs side of the board. For years, he has carried on a long-distance game with Lady Margolotta of Ɯberwald, communicating moves via clacks. While initially opposed to the street game foot-the-ball, the Patrician recently endorsed the version of the game played at Unseen University.

Several of his abilities (an absolutely photographic memory, the ability to solve puzzles almost instantly and an apparent inability to get drunk) suggest he may not be entirely human.

Too many zeros in the version number, I'll wait a bit before upgrading.

Can tell you right now that the iOS version dramatically improves playback on high-res videos. The old version started dropping frames on some of my files way back in iOS 10 on my iPhone 6 and that problem now appears to be cured.

I was thinking the same thing. On the other hand, it's just a video player which is only recreational for me, not like it's a critical part of my workflow.

Hope the same is true on the Mac OS version. I have several 1080p videos shot on my iPhone that the current VLC drops frames on occasionally.

VLC is great technology under the hood. Disappointing they're still using essentially the same 1997 interface, though.

I can't seem to figure out how to stop a video from outplaying with VLC when I double click on a file. There doesn't seem to be an option for this in the preferences.

I caught that too. I might get a BR burner for my MacPro and dink around with them now. There is a plug-in for Toast to burn them.

I switched to IINA a while ago. Should give VLC another shot just for fun, I guess.
