Know anyone in Adelaide?

We bought a kind-of high end (or at least unusual) gas cooktop at a scratch and dent sale (it had neither) some time ago, and one of the igniters has gone out. (It’s not a common spark-type igniter- it glows hot for a second and then goes out, and yes, we know that it’s the igniter because we moved an igniter from another burner to the one that went out and now that burner lights fine).

This model, we discovered, was discontinued some years ago, and parts are scarce. No luck on eBay. Turns out they have the part in Adelaide (Australia) but won’t ship to the US (which may be a distributor contractural issue). cursing smiley Everyone else (in the US) is backordered until April/May, and want twice as much.

Any ideas?

Buy three. One to install, one for the shelf, and one for eBay.

I'm sure you already have, but if not, try these guys.

They are not the least expensive.
Also, it is very unlikely they make their own igniter, so perhaps there is a tell tale something on the dead one?

Isn't it about time for the airline sale on trips to Australia? How many igniters would pay for your ticket?

Surprisingly few, considering it's just a little white stick about 2 inches long with a couple of wires coming out the bottom. They're around $80 (AUS) in Adelaide; up to nearly $200 stateside.

Yes I do. We have family South Australia just south of Adelaide.
PM me with the details and let's see what can be done.

Why the big secret about the manufacturer, stove model, and part number? Is this stove for a top secret CIA culinary mission?

I doubt the stove company manufactured or purchased a completely unique part for that function. Clothes dryers and furnaces also use that type of ignitor, it's nice because it's quiet and doesn't have the snapping noise of spark ignition.

Somebody is sitting in a warehouse right this minute staring at a bin of those things with a non-OEM label and wondering how they're ever going to get rid of them. Have you looked at Canadian or British parts suppliers?

Yeah, we’ve pretty much looked everywhere. We’ve found one of the igniters actually in existence (as far as we can tell) out east, but it’s $160, plus tax, plus shipping. And what if another goes out? We have an order in for two with Sears Parts Direct (for $246 total, delivered) but they now tell us it’s backordered from the manufacturer, and the actual manufacturer of the cooktop (Fisher & Paykel) says the model’s long discontinued, and the replacement parts are designated “obsolete”, so it’s not clear to us that Sears will actually ever get the parts.

Oh well. It seemed like a good idea at the time of the scratch and dent sale, and we’ve really enjoyed it - it’s the easiest-to-clean gas cooktop ever, since the burners and pot supports actually retract into the cooktop’s glass surface, making it perfectly flat and easy to scrub. I’ve got a perma-search registered at eBay. The only thing we’ve found there is a store in Houston listing a demo model of the same cooktop at $1999 (holy smokes! I think we paid circa $400).

Edit: The burners do this:

A clever idea, I thought, but apparently they didn't sell well enough for the company.

Thanks, but no. No match on the part number or model number there.

Nice cooktop .
Far , far far, removed from the KISS design principle.
Look at the last picture in the manual.
