Video conference lighting - any advice?
Posted by: mattkime

I work remotely and spend a lot of time on google hangout. My current lighting is pretty bad (directly overhead). I'd like to figure out some better lighting. Perhaps two small-ish soft lights on left and right sides.

Anyone have advice for accomplishing this for relatively cheap?

I think your instincts are good.
Just remember not to stand up on camera and demonstrate that you are not wearing pants....

A 2nd monitor can be used with an all white background to help illuminate a face, at least in a darker room it helps.

Not sure if this is applicable or not... but I've noticed that the color of your shirt can make your skin color look lighter or darker.

I like to put a window or bright light to my back so I look like a silhouette.

More seriously, web cam placement is key. It's better to have it up high than down low. Diffused lighting, but not from the same direction as the camera, works best. You also need to pay attention to the lighting behind you. At work we often have to turn down the lights to help the webcams work better. If we don't, the contrast is too high.

I've had that happen a number of times. (Though not on TV.) My home office doesn't have a door. Well, it does, one to the garage. So sometimes when the fam comes home they can be seen walking by.

There's also a couple other doors - behind which is the washer and dryer. Recently I got off a video conference and realized the Mrs had a bra hanging on the door knob, and that was visible in the video feed.

Maybe something like these rechargeable under cabinet strip lights $21: [www.amazon.com]

One on each side of your computer screen (assuming iMac or laptop) or on wall. Should give nice even light. These are 6000K which might be too cool. I'd think 3000k would be better. Rechargeable and magnetic mounts.

Even aiming a light at a wall in front of you will give needed fill. You can also put a white cardboard behind your camera with a light aimed at it. Just use something to broaden and soften the light.
