One last time: spinning beachball

For those who have followed this issue, I've tried everything suggested. Couldn't find anything unique in Console. It even hung when operating from a Superduper clone created before the problem began. So have decided that the old machine is going. Now the new issue.

Can I use Migration Assistant to upload files to the new machine (Air) without introducing the old computer issues into the new machine? Should I try to upgrade the old MacBook all the way to High Sierra from 10.6.8? What is the danger in doing the upgrade if the MacBook crashes during the upgrade process? Don't want to lose precious files from the old machine.

What is your recommendation as to the safest data transfer method?

Try to avoid migrating applications. Just migrate your files.

Saint Cloud, Minnesota, where the weather is wonderful even when it isn't.

How new is the Air? Running High Sierra?

The Migration Assistant in High Sierra supposedly supports migrations from 10.6.8, but in my experience it conforms to the upgrade guidelines -- won't show the source-volume or messes up the migration unless the source has at least 10.8 installed. But if you're not migrating EVERYTHING then the odds of a good result go up.

Speedy probably has the right idea: For the best chance at a smooth migration from 10.6.8, migrate just your user account which will take your home folder and all of the documents/settings saved therein. Install your apps later.

Migrate from your clone if that's recent enough to catch everything important.

I recently read something about it best doing the migration in steps. Like 10.6 to 10.8, etc.

Why use "migration" when you can drag and drop files to move them?

Yes I AM that stupid, so try not to be too harsh, I haven't had my coffee.

OS X has thousands of invisible system files that need put in specific locations. Migration assisant takes care of that.

If you are just moving documents, thats different.
