Frying in oil is dry heat.

Air fryers are essentially small convection ovens. We get the same results with our Breville 860 and can do a great deal more (both in terms of quantity and function)

Been using a Phillips AirFryer xl for some time, as stated a prosumer convection oven. I recommend in whatever form, and I also looked into a regular kitchen oven (LG or Samsung IIRC) that had a decent and well reviewed convection unit.

We got one of these about a year ago: (actually Dec. 2016)
Amazon

We use it about 3 or 4 times a week. Cook chicken strips, nuggets, fries, etc. My wife likes it.

Wirecutter says the current offerings for air fryers are subpar; seems you could get most of what an 'air fryer' does out of a good convection oven, as others here have pointed out.

Mine was $45 (think it was a discontinued model) and I've enjoyed using it a lot. It's not large, but I don't normally cook for big groups. I find it much more convenient and faster than using a bigger convection oven, as the small space heats up really quickly. Particularly good for tofu, and I've even used it for asparagus that was delicious. Definitely worth the money I paid. However, I've seen some that look just like mine for $100, and I'm not sure I would have taken a chance on another kitchen gadget if it hadn't been so much cheaper. Very glad I did, though!

Forgot to mention that mine is from Avalon Bay, and looks like this (although I'm not sure this is the same model):

I'm confused... don't they do some sort of oil mist inside as well ? We've had a convection oven for 15 years and love it. But an oil mist ... and heat... add a spark and you've got a nice fuel air bomb ?

I have the Cuisinart TOA60 and I adore it. It fits a whole 12" pizza. I use it instead of a toaster oven AND my convection oven. You manually spray the food with oil but I guess you don't HAVE to use any oil. I find the results quickly finished and excellent quality. Potatoes, tofu, vegetables, baking....

Yes! We have the Philips Viva and we love it. Much better than a convection oven, cooks faster and crispier due to the use of coil and more air movement.

I have a generic one (I think it was a Groupon deal). If you want traditional fried foods to be crispy like a traditional fryer (think fries or mozzarella cheese sticks), you're going to have to introduce some oil. Spraying with canola oil cooking spray before cooking in the air fryer seems to help with the crispness.

Agreed on oil... I have a nice sprayer I bought on Amazon. One thnig that turns out surpringly wonderful is plain green beans sprayed with oil and air fried. No breading (that is very good but a lot of work).

Another vote for the Phillips VIVA. Where recipes tell you to turn the food over half way through the cooking I don't have to with the Phillips. Get an Evo oil spray bottle from QVC each pull of the trigger delivers 1/4 of a teaspoon of oil.
