Looking for well-known phrases said when someone leaves a game
Posted by: Todd's keyboard
Date: March 26, 2018 01:30PM
A colleague and friend passed away over the weekend. We worked and played together with the New Games Foundation. Bernie de Koven took the ideas of play much further than I did, and became known internationally as a game designer and advocate for the benefits of play in many different settings. One of his jobs was as an early computer-game designer for Mattel.

I'm mulling over various metaphors to use when informing others that knew and worked with Bernie. It seems appropriate to use a game metaphor. For example, a player says "Uno" to announce she is on the verge of playing a final card and ending the round.

Might forum members be able to suggest other things that are said when a player leaves the game/field?

thanks, Todd's diminishing keyboard

His draw pile was finally empty?

Something chess related?

Or what about framing as winning the game in some fashion?

Thanks for the suggestions (and please keep them coming).

Am feeling a bit nostalgic right now and would like to share an essay that Bernie wrote for his book, "The Well-Played Game." I hear that this book was re-published and is considered a valuable resource for computer game designers.

"A Million Ways to Play Marbles, at least" is Bernie's wonderful exploration of creativity, games, and play. It is among the better pieces of writing I have come across.

Not so much for ending a game, but all nerds should be aware of this meme.

For the Pittsburgh Penguins, the phrase is: "Elvis has left the building". When the Penguins have won a home game Mike Lange says that after the buzzer. The announcers for the Pirates adapted it for when a Pirate hits a homerun into the river.

I would recommend crafting a phrase of your own based on a game that your friend had designed and that would be familiar to the people you are informing. That way you would be honoring your friend with specificity rather than using a common phrase that is worn out and trite. Alternatively, the phrase could be based on one of his favorite activities, or on a well known phrase or chapter title from his book.

At the end of a soccer game, we would say "It's Miller time" (after an old beer commercial) and then head off to the pub for a non-Miller microbrew. This probably won't work for your purpose but perhaps you could adapt it.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Some examples:

Bernie has departed for the ultimate games preserve.

Bernie has departed for the ultimate marble court.

Bernie played the game well. (I particularly like this one.)

Folks,

Many thanks for the ideas.

Conferred with a friend and we went with, "Bernie has left the playground."

The notice went out to a private Google Group of New Games folks who played and worked with Bernie.

Bernie found out he had cancer last year. That same group initiated a round of Peer Pong. Some of us wrote up some stories about our interactions with him and posted to the group. Bernie appreciated that he could read those stories while he was still alive.

He really was an interesting and influential character in the world of play. He wasn't that interested in sports, nor even games. For him play was a field to explore and enhance creativity and communication. Anyone interested can read my thoughts about him here.

thanks again, Todd's grateful keyboard.
