Post Interview Thank You note.

I am in the process of hiring several people. I usually get 10-20 applications for each position, I phone/Skype interview what seems like the best 4-5 candidates and I invite 3 for on-site interview. I usually do not get any Thank You note after the interview. Not that I care, if someone is really good I will hire them regardless if they sent a short note or not.

But I am curious of this thank you note is out of date nowadays. When I was looking for a job long time ago, it was strongly recommended to follow up with a note after the interview. It seems like the custom is gone now.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I always do it, and given 2 equally qualified choices, if one sent a note and one didn’t guess who is getting hired. I also would say the more professional the position the more likely you are to get notes.

Yeah... During my time as a manager, I did many dozens of phone interviews, and face-to-face interviews with maybe 30-ish candidates.

I got exactly one thank you note. It was a little bit of a surprise.

I did hire that person.

Most of the people I've interviewed are seeking writing-based positions, so it's pretty common for me to receive thank-you notes; I think that's primarily because the applicants see it as another small opportunity to show their skill set.

And I send them when I'm interviewing because I never want to be left thinking that the lack of one was the reason I didn't get an offer.

But my spouse, who works in a different industry, rarely receives or sends thank-you notes.

Higher ed. I don't know if it's industry-wide, though, perhaps just her experience.

Never decline an opportunity to get your name in front of a recruiter's face one more time. A thank-you is an easy, sanctioned way to do that. Tossing pebbles at their bedroom window at 4:00 AM is not, let me tell you.

Better than those unhelpful unsigned ones from the guys you didn't hire.

Software. There are a lot of highly introverted software engineers, and interpersonal interactions tend to go missing.

I am in Education/IT. Thank You notes or at least a follow up email are a requirement if you want me to hire you. I want personable people, and if you aren't personable enough to even say Thank You after an interview you won't cut it.
