did they search people for a phone or was it voluntarily given up? I've started to leave my phone in the car at some gigs, but if I don't drive to the gig I'll consider leaving it at home, but I'd like something like this if it didn't take too much time.

The guy keeps cranking them out. How long was the show?

I've been to dozens of phone free concerts. Nobody had cords that long.

Sounds reasonable to me. But you know there's always gonna be that ONE GUY that'll make this process ugly.

It was a great show, probably about an hour and a half I'm guessing. It was loud and the acoustics at this venue are not that great, but still had a fun time, especially without all the smartphone distractions (and lights).

You couldn't get into the venue without passing through the Yondr people who had you put your phone on vibrate and then slip it into the pouch and then through a metal detector.

Strict rules that if somehow you were able to sneak a phone in, you would be ejected immediately. I didn't see anybody with a phone out. They had areas in the lobby of the venue that you could go to in case you needed to use your phone for whatever reason.

The absolute worst I've ever seen was at a Johnette Napolitano solo (which was pretty awesome) show at a nice room in Chicago some years back..not even that deep into the Smart phone era..it was the Blackberry era or so..and Johnette responded by, at various moments, just sorta standing around on stage..saying nothing, shuffling about looking around..it was SO uncomfortable in an intimate room..after a few moments of this you could see people putting phones in pockets and paying attention,,,but back out they came..a lot of people went off to the side into the darkness and continued..it's a verifiable sickness.

kudos to jack for doing this..not a huge fan of his work but things are so damn silly right now

Chrissie Hynde also hates the smartphones at her shows. Last show I went to of hers, there was signage everywhere and ushers telling people to put phones away during the show. She called people out during the show, stopping mid-song to do so.

krani, you saw Johnette? totally jealous, one of my all time favorite rock voices.

I also wonder if whipping out a camera would be met with the same attitude.... remember when cameras would always be banned from shows?

at King Crimson last fall, they politely required / requested that phones stay away until Tony Levin took his out at the end to take pictures, then all were welcome to join in.

I didn't see any phones out during the show, and it felt good to leave mine in my pocket.
