I have a Yeti and a Grizzly. No, I aim not made out of money. But my dog and I do work out of my parked vehicle all day at least once a week. I need my food, her food reward, and her cooling vest to stay cold. Occasionally I need everything to stay cold without adding ice for 3 days. The Yeti beats the Grizzly.

Gotta watch for the sales. It's still expensive but they are far above the Coleman/Igloo type coolers.

They don't start featuring the coolers until it's 90 degrees.

They have their place, as Pam gave an example. Most people could use a Coleman or an Igloo. It isn’t for weekend car camping. Think week long expeditions far away from electricity.

Our Yeti cooler was given to us as a present after I mentioned to mom that I didn't think I could entertain spending that much money.

While it worked wonderfully during it's one outing, after the end of a week at a music festival it was stolen. Apparently that is pretty common with the Yeti, at least according to the State Park rangers.

We replaced it with an Rtic cooler which is very similar but at about half the price. We also spray painted a company logo on each side and the lid of the Rtic so it would be identifiable.

The Rtic keeps ice for twice as long as the heaviest duty Coleman we own.

Like Pam, I have spent many years during which I worked in the field far from any source of ice or electricity for weeks at a stretch. I am happy to pay quite a bit extra for a cooler that will give me even a day of extra duration. As C(-)ris noted, these are not aimed at casual campers.

Pam and davester seem to be ideal users. Around here, the rednecks use them to keep beer cold.

It's no different from folks who get giant 4WD Suburbans and pickups because they like the "look", and then just drive them to the mall.

I'm a poser. All I have is a Yeti hoodie sweatshirt (50% off sale). I use a hand-me-down Coleman cooler.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. But buying 'high-end' products for the status one feels it brings is laughable. It's their money, so I hold my tongue. Generally.

As far as water is concerned, I'm good with a fat rat to get me through a trek to McDonald's and back.

I have a Pelican that was 2/3rd's the price and very good. It was rated as good or better than the Yeti version. Just bought the Rtic 40 soft cooler - knock-off of the Yeti's. Rtic's have very good reviews. They had to make some design changes as Yeti sued them.

We have 4 Yeti cups - got them because a family member is able to get a huge discount on them. They work really well. There are cheaper version (Rtic and others). I'm leery of some of the cheap brands from a quality of materials standpoint.

I mentioned the MP Yeti-style coolers in a previous thread. I might get one (MP) if/when I buy a boat.

Decay and rjmacs,

Maybe I'm missing something here. what's the beef with people buying products from North Face for every day usage? North Face produces reasonably good quality outerwear. Never heard of people buying it for status and such. they bought it because it looked good and performed well.

I owned a North Face jacket for years. It was a good jacket that fit well and I got it for a reasonably good price. the cost was definitely in line with its competitors and nothing out of the ordinary. Couldn't ask for more and didn't expect more.

No beef per se, but for many years North Face was a brand that denoted outdoor activity such as camping and hiking.

Now it's a status brand for urban and suburban denizens.

I agree with Robert. This complaint is misplaced. Long ago, North Face made purely mountaineering kit which cemented their reputation. However for at least the last decade or so they have made mostly clothes for leisure and mild outdoorsy stuff.

" However for at least the last decade or so they have made mostly clothes for leisure and mild outdoorsy stuff."

In the Fall through Spring in Seattle, I will see dozens of soccer moms each day walking their dogs in the exact same black fleece North Face pullover. About the most "outdoorsey" thing they will likely do that month.

FWIW, my family has a 4 digit REI membership number. Back when REI was also for hardcore explorers. And I have several rifles Dad bought from Eddie Bauer, before they specialized in urban hiking apparel and glued on emblems for Fords.

Even a locked Chrysler minivan isn't bear-proof. Mythbusters. 2 out of 2 in under 30 seconds. Didn't climb over the seats, just ripped them from their floor mounts.
