What do we like for flash thumbdrives nowadays?
Sandisk 64GB USB2 for $13? Good or Eh?

Or... spend 40% more for Sandisk 64GB USB3 ($18)?

I bought 2 PNY 64 gb drives for cheap - they both quickly failed. My sandisk drives are OK, but have a glacial slow right speed (They're sandisk ultra!)

3d,

Neither. Stick with the SanDisk Extreme USB 3 series. Noticeably more expensive but _reallly_ fast, even when used under USB 2.0 and well worth the bucks. Won't buy any other drives until I find one that offers similar or better performance for the same or less money. Haven't found one yet.

Thankfully, I have never found the need/use for them.

But I agree with Robert, Sandisk Extreme or bust.

Grrr.... Sandisk Extreme 64GB USB3 is 250% more in price ($33)
I've been keeping my eye on the wrong product! LOL Good thing there's no rush.

jdc,
I rarely use them too but once in a while a co-worker will tell me I just HAVE TO watch the new season of something something. And of course I have no idea where my last thumb drive went.

3d,

Yups. Expensive. Yet o have one fail and they do the job nicely for a slew of tasks. Heck, I even use them as emergency boot drives. One I used as a primary boot drive for a week when I wanted to play with a new OS!

The Sandisk Extreme USB is one place where you really get what you pay for. I have 3 for different uses and they're simply the best performance for the $ out there.

I've got two SanDisk Extremes, 32G and on 64G.

One of the 32G isn't usable as a boot drive because of a 'flipped bit', so I had to get a second that could be bootable. This maybe a one-time thing as the 64G purchased later works as a boot drive. The no-go 32G still works great for sneaker net.

Maybe something to be aware of.

I have 2 dual port USB-C & USB3 flash drives. Great for 2016-17 MacBook Pros.

Yes, they cost more, but an unreliable flash drive can cost your hundreds of dollars in hassle and wasted time.

I'll second the recommendation of the Extreme USB 3 drives—that's my preferred drive for personal use—but I may consider picking up some of the slower/cheaper ones for sharing with others.

On occasion I will share some large video files with friends from some of our kids' sporting events. I'm not necessarily looking to be compensated, but I also don't want to give someone a $40+ drive that they assume is 10 bucks.

These USB 3.1 drives are about the size of a Chiclet and are available in capacities from 16–256 GB:

Article,

Has SanDisk resolved the heat issues that affect the Ultra Fit series? Older versions were problematic because of excessive heat.

That's what I heard.

These new ones stay cool. (I have 4 of the 16 GB versions.)
