I have heard this played through two different sources. Once I heard yanny, once laurel.

I hear both.

Laurel is louder. Then in the background, I hear Yanni, faintly a beat after Laurel.

Apparently comes down to the playback source and quality of the recording as to what you tend to hear. I’ve heard recordings where I hear yanny, others where I hear laurel, and still others where I first hear yanny, than try to hear laure, hear both overlapping, then I hear laurel and can’t “unhear” it after that. The source is actually laurel from a vocabulary list (think laurel leaf, not the name).

“Raul Veiga, CEO of production company Radial Produções, said it's an example of the McGurk Effect — when you hear something different from the actual sound because of visual stimulus.

"So...it’s actually a very poor-quality recording and the brain gets influenced by what you read first, before you actually hear it. What gets people confused is that it’s not Yanny or Laurel, it’s more of a 'Yarel' thing," he said.

The device you're using to listen to it can also have an effect.

"Different speakers or headphones can have drastically different frequency response profiles (for instance, laptop speakers have limited low-frequency response), which will lead to either name being more emphasized to a listener," Poppy Crum, chief scientist at Dolby Laboratories, said in a statement.”

It's closer to Yanny, although the "N" sound is a bit muddy. I don't hear an "L" sound whatsoever.

Interesting. Whichever you hear first persists as you move the slider to change the freq response. Until it doesn't, then the reverse happens.

I heard Laurel the first ten times, on my right ear alone. I heard it Yanny once, on my left ear alone, then I heard Laurel again. On both ears, I hear Laurel.

Because it shows how our perception of reality is subjective and open to manipulation?

i was getting my hair washed and my loctician had the tv on. i wasn’t following the show at all and wondered why a robotic voice was repeatedly saying “hear me. “

i guess i’m closest to the yanni camp.

Laurel near normal pitch and higher. Yammy at lowest pitches, though I do notice overlap/flipping back and forth midway down the lower half on the NYT slider Wags links.
