It's a cold storage facility, probably for apples. They put the apples in around October and pump all the air out and replace it with Nitrogen. Then they start shipping the apples a few months later.

Awww... I always thought they store apples in cool silos not a boring square gray building. Interesting info with the nitrogen. I guess that's how supermarkets have apples in the summer(?).

Sorry, I've been a little slow this week. The link works.

I have a feeling nitrogen storage is the reason Costco has apples with no taste. Local grocery stores are a little better.

It's more the type of apple, than the storage technique that hits the flavor. There used to be 5000+ varieties of apples in the US, now there are about 10 that are commercially available, mostly chosen for their ability to resist bruising, pests, and how well they fare in storage.

This is a really good short video that covers some of the history.

Storage of apples in a 2% oxygen environment has been practiced for decades. Some apple varieties store well, some do not.
The apples you find out of season in the store have either been stored or impotred.

A childhood friend down the street has kept his family orchard going (third or fourth generation) and he does hayrides in the Fall along with pick-your-own and all that good Fall stuff. He takes his tractor and a hay wagon up the street to the University and brings kids to the farm many, many of whom are seeing an apple tree for the first time in their lives and are amazed when they find pumpkins growing in a field. Like-right there !!

pre-cast engineered panels, been in use for 60+ years for single floor, open space projects. A lot of warehouses & distribution centers (think Amazon, etc) are done this way. Depending on the location, the foundation can take much longer to construct than the actual building. Buildings go up "over night" but it then takes weeks/months to fit them out, inspections, etc.

I remember going to the cold storage facilities in Wenatchee in E Washington when we visited my grandparents in the '70s. Nothing new about it. They had multiple rooms, and only opened one when the previous one was empty. Back then, the fruit had flavor, and the apples were softball sized. Now all the really nice ones get shipped to Asia where they sell for $5 a piece. THAT'S why we don't see them here anymore.

To get flavor, we resort to buying organic apples ($2-$3/pound). We avoid the so called organic labeled ones at Sam’s, Walmart, or Kroger (no flavor, spoil fast, almost mushy texture). Unfortunately our only choices eeem to be Whole Foods or Natural Grocers. At least they’re delicious, crisp, and never seem to spoil.
