Helicopter thing

I just saw two helicopters heading south over the East River: one was going down river seemingly sideways, the nose pointing west as it went south. The other helicopter was much larger and seemed to be following the first. Now they are flying back this way very close together. Disappearing to the north, then circling back. Now heading back widely separated. Can’t tell if they are police…

Betcha Helicopter A has a camera mounted on it... Helicopter B was watching air traffic and giving Helicopter A flight instructions like "come back a bit, that building is a wee bit close...".

Yep, that'd be my guess. Very likely helicopter #2 was photographing #1 with the skyline in the background. Very, very common for military visits to scenic areas.

You would think a drone would be cheaper and easier.

Also very difficult to get those sweeping vistas when you are limited to a specific area and can't fly more than 400ft up.

Photography would make some sense. There were no buildings at all close since they were out over the river, so maybe the larger one was watching for air traffic (small planes that land and tie up at a dock near 23rd St., and helicopters). A third helicopter flew south while the other two were circling north, probably regular traffic from the heliport at 34th St. The two I was watching flew over midtown a bit, near the UN as far as I could tell. The larger one left the area and the smaller appeared to land at the heliport.

It’s a busy river. I’m always a bit surprised when I see people out there on jet skis or in kayaks.

There are VERY specific rules for aircraft flying the Hudson Corridor. If those are commercial flights, the PICs (Pilot in Command) are responsible to FULLY understand AND comply with ALL of those rules. old fogey smiley

Wrong type of photography gear on a military drone. Though the man portable ones the spec ops teams have available are pretty sweet.

Maybe, but military photographers need training like anybody else, and this would be a pretty sweet assignment.

It's the military.

Cheaper and easier isn't part of the reasoning.
